View Full Version : How heavy if your kit?

Now I'm not talking about everything you own, just your carry around day-to-day bag.
I have a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 200 AW and carry the following:
40D w/ EFS 17-55 f/2.8 attached.
EFS 10-22
EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS
580EX
Spare set of AA rechargeable batteries in a case on the Lowepro strap.
2 spare 40D batteries and charger.
USB and video cords.
Phottix remote.
77mm CP filer w/ plastic box.
CF card holder with 2 spare cards.
WhiBal (http://www.rawworkflow.com/products/whibal/index.html) pocket gray card (older 3 card set)
Several lens cloths.Everything fits pretty well and is fairly easy to get at. I tweak this a bit from time to time and am trying to find room for the Angle C and the Kenko 1.4X converter.
From time to time folks lift my bag helping me get set up or just moving it at a family event and are surprised at how heavy it is. I don't think about it much till the end of a day lugging it around.
So, I put it on the bathroom scale today is it is about 10 pounds.
This got me to wondering what other folks drag around as minimum kit and how much it weighs.

I carry too much. I'd rather be prepared, than not. Almost everything, except for one long lens, goes. If I had to weigh it...nah, forget it. Not gonna do it.
Tripod, flash, camera, lenses, batteries, rocket, charger, cloths, filters, lens tissues/solution, bag, grey card, xtra cf cards, lenspen, and a long lens on the side.

I can see three things you could eliminate. I see no need to carry around the USB and video cords for the camera. They're not something you're going to use out in the field (I don't think...) The plastic box for the filter could be eliminated with a dedicated filter carrying pouch. I have two, on eht holds five filters and one that holds three. Since I don't use UV filters, the latter pouch works fine for carrying my polarizers. The battery charger doesn't seem necessary either. It's a little hard to charge batteries where there's not electricity. I realize these are small items, but every little bit helps.
Myself, most of the itme I carry one body, (40d or the 20D,) three lenses, usually a Tamron 28-75, either the 70-200 2.8 IS or the 100-400 (sometimes both) and a third lens (either a 90mm macro or a 14mm WA, depending on what I anticipate shooting.) If I'm doing an event, such as an air show, then I'll carry both bodies, the 20d with the 28-75 and the 40D with either the 70-200 or 100-400.
I'll also carry a flash (sometime one on each camera), spare batteries, (both AA and BP-511s) cleaning supplies, media cards and if I'm shooting off a tripod, my release cable. I doubt, at it's heaviest, the kit weighs much more than yours does.

My first guess was at least 20lbs, but it's about the same amount of equipment as yours. Although the most vivid memory I have carrying my equipment around was hike out to some waterfall - 3 miles in, 3 miles out and about a 1,500 elevation change. I didn't think I was going to make it out.
20D with battery grip, 100-400L, 1.4x, 24-70L, 100mm macro, 10-22efs, 430ex along with filters, cables, batteries, etc.

13.5 lbs in a Domke J3...
5D, grip, 24, 35, 16-35, 580, st-e2, batteries, hoods... occasionally add a 200 and TC, so probably 14.5 lbs

When taking family photos I sometimes hook the camera up to a TV to let folks preview the photos I have taken. Also, I know where they are when I do need them. :) But, yes, I could leave them out. Battery charger also. Filters I am just starting to think about seriously so I have a lot to work out in that area.

I guess I'll get to see this first hand soon.

A good-sized backpack - 16 lb.
All the equipment in my sig line, plus a bunch of AA batteries (NiMH and backup Alkalines), a small tripod hanging on the side of the case, couple extra flashes, misc. equipment, etc. Can't think of much in there that wouldn't potentially be useful in the field (i.e. USB cord, card reader, battery charger, etc. are not in the pack).
I lugged it around the local park today for a while when shooting, but soon realized that I wasn't going to need anything out of it other than the camera/lens hanging around my neck, so I carted it back up to the car and locked it inside.

I'm getting the helium balloon option to attach to my lens to reduce it's weight. The translucent one with the built in strobe is great for shooting events!
