Been staring at a webpage with Submit order on it for a few days now. Something in my head is telling me not to get the camera now. I guess I can't justify the price or something. I know I will like it and that I will be happy having a working camera.

Any ideas what is holding me back? 300D I would probably feel better about it if I could actually play with it in person. Don't know. :( Maybe it is price shock.

What's the price?
What are you gonna use it for?

About $1,000 after factoring rebates, $1,300 about right.

Indoor photography.
Wandering animation conventions taking photos of costumers.
Outside as well. My subject matter is mostly be people. I take photos of costumers whereever they go.

Get mostly used during conventions and when I schedule it outside of conventions. Otherwise it won't do much any other time. Quality is a priority though since I plan on selling prints eventually.

The 300D sucessor will be out soon. It'll be significantly better than the 300D, but maybe more expensive too. I bet they're doing the rebate thing to get rid of 300D stock before the new one's released.

Well, if you don't click that submit button within the next two weeks the rebates are over. If you are going for double or triple rebates, you should be paying around $500-600 for the body, which is less than many new digital point and shoots. The new drebel will likely be close to double that if not more, and it will probably be a while if ever Canon makes the mistake of making the firmware as easily hackable as the current one, which could get you a lot of good extra features for free.

I think this new model will be less restricted than the 300D, hopefully lessening the need to hack it.

I'm not sure what country you're in but $1,300 -$1,000 seems a bit high unless you are getting more lenses. The dreble here in the USA at B&H photo video goes for $899.95 with the kit lenses with a $100 rebate brings it to $799.95. But like I said don't know where you are. I would just get it, In the world of digital if you waited for the next release you'd never own one.

if you want it and if you will use it and if you need that caliber of camera versus say an A85, then get it.

the new one is always right around the corner. the price will always drop after you get one.

There is always something better around the corner... but in this case the corner is very close. The question is pricing when it does arrive.

If you know something, spill the beans. If you can....

Thing is, with up to $300 rebate on the drebel, even if it is replaced next week, it'll be twice the price.

Frankly, I think the reason that Canon has a $300 rebate on the Drebel is that they have a BOATLOAD of them to move and they need to get it moving. I expect that they didn't sell for Christmas as they had anticipated.... so.....

You're probably right about the price. If you want a good camera cheap grab the 300D now, with the rebates it's a great price.

So what exactly does the firmware hack do?

Have a read of this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34000). In short - mirror lockup, FEC, and a few tweaks. Nothing earth shattering, but very handy things to have :)

Thanks Tim. I was sort of hoping there was a way to shorten the start up time.

it's just like a car . . . it depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot.

Do you want that new 2005 SUV at full MSRP or do you want to get the 2004 version (which is still great) at dirt cheap?

In the end, you still have a new car and it's not killing your wallet

I am looking in to getting a DRebel, and have seen people on here talking about the 2x and 3X rebates, B&H has the $100 rebate which is pretty good, but I haven't seen anywhere that has the bigger rebates? Could some one point me to one of the reputable resellers that has the bigger rebates or is the $100 the best I am going to get. I'm probably going to get it either way but why pay more than I have to right.

B&H is quoting you the same rebate as everyone else. They are just stating by default the rebate is $100.

If you purchase an extra lens, rebates get double on the camera and lens. Buy two extra lenses and the rebates are tripled.

Beach Camera (http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/Product.asp?ProdTypeList=&Sku=CNDIGRBL1855) has the Rebel with kit lens for $779 minus $100 to make $679. Better deal than B&H and they are a reputable dealer with a physical store front.
