Just don't listen to what he says. He just sits there at the most crowded intersection and tells everyone who walks by to be good little boys and girls. He calls sexy women whores and the guys with them pimps!! HAhahahaa!!!!!

Yupp.. thats the dude. You can see how serious he is preaching to this little lady. I had to kinda hide behind her a little because if I he saw me he would scream out something i didn't want to hear.

WOW! I just enlarged your photo and can now read the sign. This guy certainly has a "MONUMENTAL" task ahead, considering He's in Frisco.

Ahaahaaa... He is at it 365 days a year!!! Rain or shine!!! I remember him ever since I was a little kid. Same sign and same outfit! This is the first time I've ever seen someone talking to him. That girl was pretty too... hahah.. I doubt he would do her any good by preaching nonsense.

I can't decide which one I like better -- "No Pimpism" or "No Reckless Eyeballing" :)

Candid Bandit I get you again !

>Just don't listen to what he says
ERROR : YOU MUST listen to them, talk to them, then shoot if is the case.

I see you have an interesting tension to "street life", but you go around "stoling pictures" with your hard weapon. This snaps are too far from.
Get a 20mm on 20D and go NEAR people. Create the situation for framing not passivate so fast. Run together with them, offer a drink, invent something, smile more. Let them talk and take their eyes in the context you want, when they smile, when they get serious and so on. You have to try B&W for sometimes, it will help you to concentrate on the story and the framing. What I'm trying to say is that you have numbers to go some deeper in this project. Be more a storyteller than descriptive, although some descriptive shoot may be useful to the story.
(Stop it..I'm doing too much the teacher....and sorry for my english..)

Hoping to motivate you more...;-)

Ciao

Nice website dobova! Thanks for such an important lesson!! I'll try your advice the next time I go out.

What you say about talking to the subject seems a little difficult for me. I'm not very good at communicating with people.. I mean my English is not bad just I get very nervous. You can say for sure that I'm a very shy person. I can only have conversations with someone for example here on a board like this. Otherwise I don't really chat up with strangers.

Thanks for taking your time to help me improve!! I really appreciate it alot.

Thank you!

Get a 20mm on 20D and go NEAR people.
First you may want to invest in good dental insurance.
I wouldn't feel very comfortable being so close to some of your "targets".
Most of them are harmless, but better be safe...
Other thing - much larger personal space in US compared to Italy.
Dobova's tips are good, but not for all of your " models".
By the way- I really like your Kung Fu story and images.

Eheheh ok..really don't get me too literally. There are limits and you must understand that if you go beyond you get kicked in the ass...
You are right, we have more personal space than in USA. But Never use your camera to shoot in face of people unless you have introduced yourself in someway, also here is the same !
My advise is very easy : be in the action, not out. You must choose what the right way to be in the action for your feeling. What's is really important (in reportage I mean) is to understand the difference between "to be a photographer" and "to do a photographer".

Candid Bandit, just for an example : http://public.fotki.com/dobova86/bambi/ (it's bit hard for WWF guys)
I met this man during a morning walk in the Tuscany hood. I felt his face had something interesting asking him for an indication. The conversation goes far beyond, and he described me that he was a hunter. Then bla bla bla.. I felt also that he was very proud to be an hunter, so I tried to be invited to go deer hunting...and I got it. I carried with me my EOS 1DMKII and a 16-35mm 2.8L nothing else (apart from some CF and battery, and mosquito repeller ;-)).
Obvious this is my idea about photography and not, may be, your.

Good luck

Candid , I love the idea of the shots you are taking .
it can be very awkward getting street shots. ( I am shy also.. believe it or not)
when I saw your post subject line here I was looking forward to seeing what you captured this time.
the shots make us look into a lot of things

I wonder would you be interested in looking at (4) shots I took of a preacher/preaching ?
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
I won't invade your space
taking candid shots like it is my favourite of all the shots
and I love to see other people's pictures
I like your opinion and what you think

getting in as close as possible is best when taking the shots
without the people being much aware of it.
I don't really know how that works but it can do, a lot of the time,
if they are distracted already...in some way

your pictures will be 'old fashioned' in years to come. that's important
and priceless in ways because things will 'move on'
you know how we love to see a picture of by gone years.
it can be amazing

Marie!! I would love to check out your shots of the preacher preaching. I expect him to be very emotional as he is trying hard to make people believe in whatever he is preaching about! That is interesting!! And being a lady photog is your best advantage!!! I bet you can go around the whole day capturing candids of people and no one will say a word to you. Men photog one the otherhand do not get such privileges. So thats why I tend to just get the shots as quickly as possible and get the heck out.

You should just shoot whatever you think is nice. But make sure you are in a place where a camera isin't awkwards. Go to places with alot of people so you have more chances of getting something worthwhile. Always shoot on burst mode and get as many shots in before the subject notices you. Try to get different angles if possible but stay discret and not intrude in what the subject is doing. I spend a whole day shooting most of the time, usually about 400 shots. But only maybe about 10 shots are really something. Just delete the crappy ones since it don't cost anything but your time. Digital photography has really jump started candid or realism photos because it don't cost anything to delete unlike film.

And then after about 10 years from now you can look back and laugh at how the people were dressed and how weird and old fashion they look!!

candid, I get a bit nervous when I come onto people with my ideas
and I changed some of that post I sent youhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

but at the very same moment you must have replied to me so some of the message is different (mine)
thanks for your reply http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

I have a different camera and also I do it a different way

I never go out with the intention of taking candids and never want to do it that way, if you understand.

I just take the camera with me and should something hop up
and I don't feel that I am in anybody's way, then I take a shot or two
but I would never hang around a person or place in the street for long
I wouldn't enjoy that way candid.

that's what I wanted to discuss.
we have different ways and means

that sounds like a spy thriller http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

but I got something like your shot here with a big newspaper notice on a stand on the main street in the city with people rushing about past it
the headline notice was about pres. bush at the height of the war in Iraq
I never showed the picture but I like that type of shot too
and yours reminded me of it

These shots are wonderful and a delight to look at!!! I see what you mean about our different methods. I'm out there looking for candids and you are out there waiting for them. I just absolutely love that last shot with the preacher pointing toward Heaven!!! Perfect perfect moment.
