The most important thing is DO NOT STORE NEW IMAGES ON THAT CARD.

When you format your card, you just erase the directory. The files are still there.

There are some good recovery programs but I have no info on them right now.
Store your card in a safe place until somebody help with the names of the programs.

Just type "recover" in the search function.

There are many topics about the same thing. As mentioned, just don't take any more pictures or write over the files.

also I have used this program on a few occasions on hard drives, I don't see why it wouldn't work with a memory card, it has saved my butt more then once...
it's called EasyRecovery Professional

SanDisk ships a "Rescue Pro" application with their Extreme III cards; I've also used PhotoRescue Advanced (http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/) (commercial; the trial will show you what can be recovered; once you pay and get the key you'll be able to save them).
