View Full Version : Quoting Photos

I've spent a lot of time recently looking at the Image archives on a lot of lenses. I've noticed quite a few quoted posts of images. It gets quite annoying to have to scroll through the same photos over and over. Especially if it's a quote of 3 or more photos. I think this rule needs to be enforced way more than it is. The 8 photo rule for posting is enforced harder than this, and it's no where near as bad as quoting pics.

Is there some sort of code that can be put in that downsizes quoted images to thumbnail size or something? Although quoted pictures is annoying, not knowing what's being commented on is also irritating sometimes especially in longer threads

Posting more than 8 is worse than quoting because the quoted photos do not use up bandwidth as they have already been downloaded to your computer. So I doubt we will enfore that particular guideline more.

That doesn't hurt at all unless you're on a 56K connection. And even then it's not that bad. I'd rather load 25 separate images than scroll through the same 5 over and over again that I already saw. I don't really see anyway anyone can defend that 8 image rule anymore. This is 2008. Not 1995.

We have had this dicsussion a million times and the limit of 8 is not going to change for one major reason, Pekka do not want members to use POTN as a personal gallery. Members should only post the best and link to the rest.

And You would be surprised to know how many members actually do use 56k lines.

I know it's not going away. And I do understand the "not using POTN as a personal gallery."

But as far as limiting it on the basis of 56K'ers this day in age is just beyond me. But, anyway, my main problem was the quoting issue not the 8 image limit, so I won't talk about that anymore. That thumbnail thing would be nice though.

You have to be kidding! The pages are soooooo slooooooow on my 56k connection (when they contain images). I usually stop the page loading once the text is loaded when I connect on a dial-up and skip the images. More than 8 per thread would be a real nightmare.

Me! It's all I have at work. Broadband at home.

Don't forget that sometimes people browse with their phones or hand-held devices where the connection speed is far slower than your domestic broadband connection...

This has got to be the only forum I know of that makes rules that pity the small majority of users instead of the majority.

But, rules are rules.

I guess you don't read.

I said the MAIN reason for the rule is that Pekka do not want members to use POTN as personal gallery. End of story.

It's not just to save bandwidth,.

Lets be honest, NO ONE wants to look at 52 photos in a row on a forum thread.
No one. (well maybe .02% of POTN members do.. )
If you really think people do want to see 53 of your images in a single thread, your wrong.

So at some point a limit should be applied.
We could sit here and debate what that limit should be for ever, or we could accept the current limit of 8.
Whatever the limit ends up being, (again there has to be a line drawn somewhere) and where ever that line is drawn I can assure you that there will always be a minority that feels it was the wrong choice.

So, 8 images can be just as wrong as any other limit.

re, quoting images.
I agree, members should take the time to delete the images when they quote people. It is tiresome, almost as tiresome as a thread where someone wants to post 52 images in it,.
We rarely see these posts reported, so they are clearly not offending many people other than a minor annoyance.
Speedy, It might be worthwhile for members to remind others (carefully, and kindly) of common courtesy like not quoting a stack of images, or not posting 3 posts with 8 images to get around the forum limits.
