Overcame price struggle, camera and L addiction bought

So I was whining over my difficulty to get over the sticker price shock and finally order the damn thing over in this thread (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=54354). I decided to kill myself with major sticker shock and now I have a "L" addiction coming to me in the mail! :p

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL EF-S 18-55MM KIT $779.79
Canon EF 70-200MM F/4.0 L USM LENS $569.00

Hoya 58mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter $20.95

These two lenses will cover all the range I'll ever need for a good while. In the future I'll grab an extra battery and a 580EX. Eventually(Year...) a 17-40mm or 24-70mm to replace the kit lens. Then eventually a 50mm f/1.4mm.
I already have a bunch of stuff to complement this setup. 1gb and 256mb CompactFlash and a bunch of rechargeable AAs and chargers for when I get the 580EX.

Feel free to offer me any other suggestions for absolutely neccessary items before I complete my order at Adorama, but I don't think there is any. Not bothering with a lens hood for the kit lens.

Also, take a look at the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI for about 300 $.

That lens is absolutely gorgeous and lives on my camera all the time.

The 580 EX would be overkill for the DRebel, as the discerning feature versus the 550 EX only works on cameras with ETTL-2 metering (1DII, 1DsII and 20D) The 550 EX should be a lot cheaper, for the difference you'll be able to buy at least a 50/1.8 :lol:

I would forget the UV filters and always have the lens hood on. I have done this for the last year. It ensures that you shooting with the best optics. I know you will probably be told that it will protect the lens but so does the hood. I have been shooting as a photojournalist for over a year. This was suggested to me and none of my fellow shooters have ever had an issue where a filter would have saved the lens. If the impact is that great chances are good you will break the filter and the lens. The lens hood will do alot better and can absorb more damage. This is advice from guys and gals who are in the trenches everyday on the sidelines of football and hockey games. They are in close quarters in media scrums and are more likely to encounter issues. Any way that's my .02 give or take a penny. Enjoy your new gear beware L stands for LURE.

Yes, the lens hood does help. I really think it comes down to personally preference. I rather keep a filter on there to keep me from accidently sticking my fingers on the lens because I know I'll be nervous getting any sort of cleaning solution near that much money. Unless you can't use the lens hood and filter at the same time...

Quite a contrast between your two lenses. I have heard many praises for the 70-200 4L. Not a bad lens to "start" out with. You might also consider a sturdy tripod/head combination in your future purchases. I know you'll get it cause this purchasing craze wont stop until you eventually get everything you want/need.

Yes, it is quite the contrast. I know I will see the difference, but I will wait it out. As far as I'm concerned, pictures from the 18-55mm kit lens are AMAZING! You have consider what I'm moving up from, a 1mp Kodak DC265. Here is a picture of my tripod so you can get an idea of the image quality.

This tripod has been in our family for a long time and was handed down to me a few years back.
