I've had a couple weeks to tinker with my G9. One of my biggest frustrations seems to be the flash. I guess my wife has lightning fast reaction times because she is usually mid- or full eye closure when a flash snaps. So this weekend we had to take some photos and I brought the G9. I modified almost every flash setting I could think of to get a quicker sync between flash and shutter. I even tried a couple tricks where you snap before reaching "1, 2, 3". Nevertheless, her eyes were mostly closed and it doesn't make for a great picturebook in those cases.

I'm willing to try any suggestion. Thanks.

Ahh, you've been caught by the famous/infamous Canon preflash.

It's amazing that some people can react so quickly but in some group photos this past week, I noticed the same thing -- even with a DSLR. It does no good to press the shutter button halfway either because the preflash does not happen until the shutter is fully pressed. But there are two fixes:

1. Switch to manual mode but you'll have to adjust the flash power manually.
2. Trigger the preflash independently by pressing the "*" button, see page 130 of the G9 manual.

Thank you for the response. I will try this when I get home tonight.
