We had a blast watching the coyotes. We'd throw a carrot over and one of them would grab it and just starting running. Another 4 or 5 coyotes would tear after the one with the carrot chasing it all over the compound. It was a riot - like watching a bunch of kids playing tag or something.

Somehow I didn't get a single shot of the action. It was fun to watch anyway.

I did get some shots when they were standing still, luckily.

Scottes,

Great photos! You were fortunate to be able to photograph them in such great light. What is GCPS III? Inquiring minds want to know...

These guys look pretty big. Are you sure they were coyotes and not wolves? I have no reference to make that claim, just curious.

Excellent captures Scott. 3 & 4 are Wall Hangers. They were a blast to watch play tag.

What is GCPS III?
Great Canadian Photo Shoot, third time.

IanD started this last year. PacAce and I drove up to Montreal to meet Ian and SSim to meet and do some shooting. It's a non-stop laugh and photography-fest.

These guys look pretty big. Are you sure they were coyotes and not wolves? I have no reference to make that claim, just curious.
You know, I'm pretty sure that everything said "Coyotes" and we called them Coyotes but they sure are big, aren't they? And I'm checking the web site and they don't mention Coyotes at all. Though maybe my favorite shots were just of the big ones...

Ian, Sheldon, PacAce? I'm starting to have my doubts...

Yeah, checking for more photos I am seriously beginning to believe that these are more wolves. Ian, do you happen to still have a map of Omega? There was one in your cup-holder in the Aztek.

I checked their website too and it doesn't mention anything about coyotes but I am pretty sure that the sign next to them does say that they are.

That's what I thought, too. And I know we all called them coyotes. But if you check some coyote pics on the web these guys don't much look like them.

A good comparison: http://www.ualberta.ca/~jzgurski/coyote.html
Which makes my shots above look very much likes wolves...

My vote is for wolves. We have Coyotes here in the desert, and they look much smaller than your guys.

Whatever they are, those are fine photos.

It is -37C out right now and out I went to retrieve the map, which is still in the cup holder. Damn it is nippy.
The map definately says that they are coyotes. The signage said that too. Maybe they are well fed. Carrots can do that

I'd wrap some up for you and send it to ya but by the time it got there it would resemble a brick with fries sticking out of it. Next GCPS poutine is on the menu for Friday night :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Cool. I really don't think I could manage to get some down here.

"Yeah, an order of fries and some gravy on the side please. Oh, and do you have any fresh cheese curds?"
"Cheese curds."
"Cheese CURDS. See You Are Dee Ess. Curds."
"It's like cheese. Sorta."
"I'm gonna eat it!"
"Yes, I'm perfectly sane."
"Whatever. Keep the fries."

Hold the fort! I just found reference to getting poutine in Lemonister, MA and Manchester, NH. I drive through both cities about once a month... There's hope for me yet....

Now let's hope that it's decent poutine...

The more I study the pictures, the more I gravitate back to coyotes. If you take away the heavy winter coat, it makes more sense. The problem is that there's no size reference in the shots.

Judging by the size of the ears realtive to the head and body, they could be coyotes.

Scottes - These are really nice. Do you send any or your stuff to webshots? The last one would make beautiful wallpaper -- even better mirrored.

Next time we go up to Omega, I'll toss Sheldon into the compound. He is about 6' or so, so we will have something to judge the coyotes size by. Might have to be quick cause they looked awful hungry last time, and with his gimpy knees, he can't run all that fast.

really great series - I'd vote for wolves also btw.

Coyotes:
Height: 18" maximum
Length: 4.3 feet maximum; 2.8 feet average
Weight: 25 to 45 pounds

Gray Wolves:
Height: 30" average
Length: 4.5 feet to 6.5 feet
Weight: 50 to 100 pounds; average is 65 pounds

I believe that Arctic (which these are not) and Timber Wolves are even larger than the Greys, but I'm not positive on that.

Maybe this will help with the determination.

This was certainly one of the criteria I thought about when I started scratching my head. I **really* don't think these were 45-lb animals - 60-80 is more like it. The last one looked like an 80-85 pounder to me.

But the think winter coat may have something to do with it.

When I get home tonight I'll check my pics from the summer GCPS and compare. Maybe I can even figure out the same animal in summer and winter....

The coyotes are thick around my house. They are in my yard every night (my cat loves to tease them). None of the ones around here look anything close to the size of the "dogs" is the above pictures. I'd bet those are wolves.

robertwgross

They could be very healthy coyotes or scrawny wolves. Whichever, that is a nice fur coat.

Just for the heck of it I called Omega. I got lucky and actually talked to Olivier Favre, the owner of the parc. The photos you are looking at are coyotes. I'm going to sit down and talk to him the next time I head up there to find out more about these guys. They are big, as he admitted, but they are well fed and looked after.

Hmm, very good point. Between the comments of Mr. Favre and Leo's irrefutable proof I'd have to say that these are coyotes after all.

Great shots, Scottes!!

I would have guessed wolves, but eastern coyotes (created by wolves breeding with western coyotes) can get quite a bit larger than their western cousins. The canines in your shots don't have the classic pointy snout of the coyotes I generally see in my neck of the woods ... but they still appear to be "pointier" than most wolf snouts.

WOW those have got to be the biggest coyotes I have ever seen, PLEASE keep them in the east. The ones we have here are bad enough. Last yeat during calving season the ranch next to us lost 6 calves to them.

You can munch on a real coyote, too, but they ususally don't like it much.

Aww man, we don't got road runners up here.

Roadrunners are thought to be desert birds, especially in Arizona and Southern California. Few self-respecting roadrunners would be caught north of Bakersfield, California. That is, up until recently. Lately one roadrunner has been sighted in a marina near San Jose, California. No desert. Only mudflats. So, finally I got my first shot of a roadrunner.

What we can't figure out is where Wile E. Coyote is.
