My Canon Manual says to use only Type I or Type II
Compact Flash Cards in my D60 . . . What is the difference between Type I and Type II and other types of CF Cards?

More importantly, I could not find any CF Cards that said Type I or Type II on the labeling. Why? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Hello

Type 2 is a bit thicker.

Typically a Microdrive is type 2.

In the world of CompactFlash cards there are 3 types: Type I, II and III.

Type I is the thinnest and usually contains memory that retains what was written to it even when it isn't attached to a power source. This type of memory is known as "flash memory", hence the name CompactFlash (it's flash memory that's compact!).

Type II is a bit thicker and allows manufacturers to squeeze in a tiny hard disk in the card -- eg the IBM Microdrive.

Type III is thicker again but isn't generally supported by digital cameras. Type III is used more in the PC world.

Manufacturers seem to assume that people know what type of card their card is. My SanDisk 256mb CF Type I card just says "CompactFlash" and "CF" on it but doesn't mention the type anywhere, not even on the packaging that came with it.

The type II will fit in the type I slot, but has capacities up to a gig, whereas the type I seems to be limited to 512MB, and they will *not* work in the type II slot. The microdrives also use the type II slot.
