Dreamlifter was only here 24 hours. Saw it arrive real close up (#4 engine only 5-10 yards away and right wing tip passed over head, while taxiing of course:):)). Waited around Tuesday near the departure end of Rwy 18. The tug pushed it out and all the way back to the beginning of the runway and it did its thing. BIG airplane.

Thank you! I hadn't seen a U-2 before yesterday either, it's much smaller looking than I pictured. The landing was interesting too, since it has no landing gear in the wings, they drove a Ford Mustang convertible along side it as it landed and had someone actually keep it from tipping and dragging the wing until they got the landing gear attached. I tried to get pictures of all that but suddenly everyone in front of me got very tall and I couldn't get a shot through the crowd (why do people have to stand up even if they're seated in the front row?)

They probably thought the plane was in trouble  Looking back at it...I see that the wing wheels are not there. I always thought they just folded back so that it could land with out a chaser to catch the wing to prevent dragging.

the 22 wasn't allowed to do a full demo due to the airspace restrictions. In a full demo it will do 360* flat spins as well as many other things.

Just out of curiosity, is a lens with IS almost a must when shooting this stuff? My 70-200 f/2.8 doesn't have it but it seems ilke it would have helped, especially with shots of prop driven aircraft.

IS is good for props, for jets it does not matter, shutter speed is high enough to shoot without the IS.

^^^ Love the "Red Dot" reflection on the E2...

Did you see that coming or did you luck into it? Either way, very cool...

Great photos everyone!
As someone who wants to go to Oshgosh(I Live in PA)I've always wanted to know how comfortable it would be to camp There in tents all or most of the week. How are the facilities for comfort there,Are there showers available for use,Can you cook you own food there(Grills)or can you buy food there, how far away are the camping areas from the main facilities?
I would really appreciate any comments from anyone who's been there as next year I do plan on going.
Thanks much!!

F117 has been retired, it's unlikely we'll be seeing those flying again. The P-38 was the highlight for me.

I realize the F-117 is retired. Once they officially retire an aircraft do they ever make appearances at airshows or is that pretty much it? Has the F-14 ever flown again? Sad to see these shelved and not make appearances anymore at airshows.

Once, just once let me see an SR-71 flanked by F-117's on each side simply for the site of it alone. I was able to see an SR-71 one time at Oshkosh in 1989. Simply amazing still today especially for being 50 years old.

Thanks Chris, the 100-400 takes some getting used to but it really produces some nice shots when you get it dialed in.

I thought that was common knowledge ;)

This was my first year going, and we camped in my brothers travel trailer. To try and answer your questions, the facilities are quite nice, There are showers and rest rooms through out the camping area. You can cook, lots of grills and camp fires around. There aren't really any places to buy prepared food in the camping area, however some of the food vendors in the show area are open fairly late. There are also shuttle buses that will take to you to stores/restaurants in the area. Depending on where in the camping area you end up (and its very large) you could be upwards of a 1 mile from the show area, but they do have shuttle buses that go back and forth all the time. Feel free to PM me if I can answer any more specific questions.

Here are some more of mine.

I was surprised at the finish on this panel (U-2)

This was taken at a local restaurant on the river. They had the plane sitting in the yard...

My attempt at the F-22 in flight.

I was feeling totally inadequate trying to use my 24-105 to get in flight photos. As it was I had to wait until the planes were at their closest approach to get the shot. After lowering the camera I notice this guy take shots while the F-22 was making its turnaround (way too far away for my puny lens) and it made me chuckle :-)

To bad we couldnt see one of these babies fly. Dont even know if any of these still exist, all I know is that it was a very difficult aircraft to fly.

There are one or two originals in museums and then there are a couple of flying replicas. Kermit Weeks has one at Fantasy of Flight near Lakeland, FL and then there's this:

To everyone that has posted. Some very amazing captures. The panning shots with the props is beautiful. Vapor shots look good too. The sunrise/sunset/colors in the sky shots, are beautiful also.

Just a question, to anyone & everyone that provide some input. If it's in the wrong place, please put it in the correct location.

I will be heading up the the Mt. Comfort Airshow/ Indianapolis Air Show in 2 weeks. I have shot Thunder over Louisville, here several times, but its' not the same as a true airshow, with planes leaving the tarmac, and doing T&L''s. Is it better to shoot Raw or Jpeg? I have applied for a Media Pass, however, I am not sure, when I will receive word, that is has been approved. Either way, I will be going & I will be taking the gear in my list, and probably renting or borrowing a 1-4. I have panning & tracking down pretty well. Is a monopod worth the hassle? Are there any better/ best settings to use on the N's, when transitioning between aircraft. Not referring to Manual/ AV/ TV. More like custom functions/ personal functions to preset. Use Center or ROF. What is the best aperture/ ISO/ metering settings to use as a baseline?

Thanks for any and all help.

Just something I did (and Oshkosh was my first attempt at an airshow) was, for jets, I flip over to AV mode where I kept f/8 dialed in. This gave me a 1/1000-1/2000 shutter speed. For props I'd switch to TV mode where I had 1/250 or so dialed in (I'd vary this some too). It allowed me to pre-set so to speak for the different types of planes that would come through.

I think my biggest wish would have been an IS lens though. I think it would have made panning and tracking a little easier and would have done better getting prop-blur.

I shoot jpeg and in TV mode. It's easy to just flip the wheel to lower the shutter for prop planes. I wouldn't bother with a monopod. Not really worth it. If you are decent with panning shots you can keep it on center. Planes and jets are predictable were they are going unlike birds so keeping them on center isn't too terribly hard. unless it's overcast you should be able to shoot at ISO 100. Even when it got pretty dark with a storm moving in at Oshkosh the furthest I had to drop was ISO 320 to still get 1/800 on the jets.

2006 Carp Air Show, in Ontario, Canada. Harsh Sun and 100% humidity. Not an ideal weather for plane shooting, but I did my best, All shot with 30D & 100-400 iS

Nice series but maybe we shouldn't pull this thread off the subject of Oshkosh with scenes from other airshows.

Just sayin'...

I have a few more shots I'd love to post from the show but I just haven't had the time to do any work on them this last week. Had a motorcycle class that demanded my complete attention lol but now that I'm done I'll throw a few more up, better late than never as I say. A single of the amazing F-22 during Saturdays show.
