Easy one, go for the 300D.
Prosumers are OK but SLRs give you much more control.
I had a G2 as my first digital camera and was more than happy with the results but when the 300D came down to a sensible price I bought one. As much as I liked the G2 it just reminded me too much of a compact film camera. Having had film SLRs since I was at school I felt I really needed/wanted a digital SLR.
Unless you are content with a prosumer I camera I would say go for the 300D

Take a look at this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53388
Should be a similar situation as yours.

The answer to stay with prosumer or go for DSLR will depend on your need and tolerance level of equipment weight. At the end of the day, there will probably be some compromises in terms of convenience and quality. Good luck on your decision and happy shooting.

Personally I'd go the DSLR route if you want more capabilities. I went this route over the last few years.
Kodak DC3400 -> Canon Powershot S110 -> Canon Powershot G3 -> Canon Digital Rebel.

I was in your situation a couple of months ago. Should I buy a better Prosumer camera than my Olympus c750 or should I buy a DSLR. I decided on the DSLR and don't regret my decision. I still use my C750, but I like the DSLR ALOT better. Go with the DSLR.

The 300D sucessor will be released some time quite soon, the main features of which will be 8MP sensor and much better low light performance. It'll probably cost more than the 300D though. You might like to work out if your priority is performance or price.

If you get the DRebel and some Canon lenses now, you'll be able to benefit form the incredible bundle offer.

Good choice p_rodgers, you will be happy with your SLR. For me it was like when I first got off dial-up and onto cable... I could never go back. The difference is that it is very easy to want better and better and better equipment. At least with my cable modem I'm not struggling daily with the notion of getting a T1 line put in...

I have the 8080. It's a great camera, but nowhere near as good as a dSLR. I think you'll be happier with the Rebel.
