We don't have Pelicans in New Zealand, so I couldn't resist photographing this one in Mykonos in 03.
Somebody should tell this guy that a Pelicans beak can hold more than his belly can!!

Pelicans are plentiful around here -- but I'd never pose with one like that! It's a keeper for sure -- nice.

I love to see pelicans and they are beautiful shots
I wonder why there are none in New Zealandhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
as there is plenty of them in Australia

Nice picture. Dont think I'd be putting my head in there though
Marie - i was wondering that too. I was surprised that they aren't there. My book on Australian birds says that during drought times in Australia they are sometimes found in New Zealand, Indonesia and the Solomon Islands, so they must be easily capable of the journey - seems like they just don't want to stay there :-)

I think the Moa's chase them away :p
It also gets a bit cold for them in the winter I imagine.

Now theres a bird I'd love to have seen (and Haasts Eagle) !
Next time I see a Pelican I might have to mention to it that moas are now extinct and that NZ has an excellent reputation for seafood. Might be overrun with them then :-) :-)

Haha, don't be too sure, I'm sure there are a few Moas left, even if they are of the Masport variety!!!
There have been a few 'sightings' around the Fjiordland, and Marlborough Sounds areas.
