Hello,

As this is my first post on this forum, I'd like to present myself:
My name is Mike, I am 27 and living in Belgium. I'm an amateur photographer for 1.5 year. I own a Canon D30, 550EX Canon flash, 24-70/f2.8 sigma lens a 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma (+ converter x1.4)

My question is : I'm planning to buy a second (slave) flash, but I don't know which one of these : a sigma 500 super or a canon 420 ex ? (they're in the same price range I can afford)

Thanks for your comments.

Mike.

I'd go for the 420 - it's guaranteed to work properly with the D30 and the 550.

I had a Sigma, and never managed to get it to slave consistently with my 550 and STE2 flash transmitter, especially with regards to setting ratios. I recently traded it in for a 550EX, and the ratio control was instantly there "out of the box".

The 420 is lighter and smaller, so may also be more convenient on occasions when you don't want to be carrying too much.

I agree - use the 420. I used both recently on a shoot as fill flash in a well lit room, and the outcome was really fantastic - I had them about 15 ft apart and never had a misfire.
