I'm trying to post a pic but i need to compress first. How do I do this and will it ruin the pic for later use?

Compress a COPY!

Do NOT try and post a full sized original.. but you also don't want to destroy the full sized original!!

You can use pretty much any photoediting software,. make your copy,. the reduce it's dimensions to about 500 ixels tall or 700 pixels wide... and save it as a jpeg.

that should do it ;)

Ay. Photoshop is good. But if you don't have the funds, or just don't like Windows/Mac ... use GIMP!

And www.imageshack.us for image hosting :)

OK. I got this far (yay). Now why the funky squares?

The compression is bad. The funky squares is the artifacting.. you compressed too much! What program did you use?

www.photofiltre.com Do you think my pic was too big to start with? It was at 1704x1333. Resolution: 150.00 (if that means anything). I compressed it to exactly 700x500, like Cyber said to.

I took this pic at 640x480. Looks fine on the zoombrowzer. I didn't even compress it.

Any thoughts, Cyber? Anyone?

Maybe it's the camera. Are you shooting high compression? Set it to fine or extra fine. What camera is it?

I'm using an A75. I already tried using a pic I shot at 640x480. I'm totally stumped.

Wow yeah.. those look really bad ?

The file size limit is 100KB... your last image says it's only 18KB? so it is compressed a lot more than you would need.

I find I can get great looking image quality at 800 pixels wide with a file size of around 80-90KB usually.

this one for example is about 90KB... http://newfoundland.fotopic.net/p10870977.html

Been reading this thread. Thanks a lot for this information, CyberDyne and Kev. I'm sure Jasc PSP should do nicely also.

I guess I'm gonna hafta break down and buy Photoshop Elements 3.0. I've been trying to compress for 2 days now. Tried all kinds of free downloads. They suck. Thats why their free. I guess you gotta be a computer brain to get GIMP. I couldn't.

Terror in his eyes! I don't know how this pic got compressed enough. I was snooping through my pics and happened to notice it was only 73KB. Don't worry, they were just playing. The old man keeping the kid in line. Too bad it's not a little clearer.

Yea, epiece, but who wants to shoot in 640x480 all the time. I wouldn't be getting my cameras potential for one thing and for another I'd like to share the pics I've already taken. So thats a problem. But I'm still working on it.

Success at last! I compressed this pic through a free download at Irfan View. I believe that Photofiltre has been the problem all along. If you go to Irfan View just click on "help" and it explains exactly how to compress. "Patience is a virtue".
