I was looking at the 28-135IS Canon lens but if anyone has any better suggestions, please let me know. I hate having to swap out from the 50mm or kit lens to my 70-300 sigma. While the Sigma takes decent pictures, I lose alot of the wider angle when I need it.

I don't think I need the 200-300mm end but I would like around 20mm. I figured the 28-135 would be good. I definetly want something over 100mm at the far end.

Does Tamron or Sigma make any quality lenses that will save me some money? I also bought the 300d awhile ago so I can still probably get another 100 off plus twice the lens rebate off the canon. (I think the 28-135) is part of it.

Is this lens any good?

The 28-135 is a very nice lens, but in my opinion the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is a better choice. It doesn't have USM and IS of the Canon lens - but instead it has constant f/2.8 aperture across its zoom range, is smaller and lighter than the 28-135, and, again - better optically, especially at f/4 and above.

Just run a short search in this forum and you'll see that the Tamron 28-75 is very highly regarded, while the Canon 28-135 is more a so-so lens ...

Harry S Truman doesn't have a "." after the "S" in his name.

I was stationed on the Harry S Truman CVN-75. Just a little trivia. =)

I have the Tamron 28-75, and I find myself wanting more zoom reasonably regularly. Apart from that it's a great lens, sharp, and fast.

Yea I was hoping for something longer then a 75mm. Makes you wonder why companies can't make a nice crisp all purpose lens. Maybe 20-150mm lens range. I hate having to switch out glass constantly.

For a walk around, all purpose lens, and for professional use as well, the 28-135 IS USM is very, very good. While the Tamron 28-75 may well be a very good lens, the fact that the 28-135 is also a good lens but that it has such a great focal length range, the Tamron can't compare. The extra focal length of 76 to 135 is a very big difference. Don't forget that the IS is present to stabilize the shots at those longer focal lengths. The 28-135 also gets very sharp photos, especially if you watch your depth of field for hand held shots, that is try to take most all you pics at f/5.6 and above and you will be blown away by the clarity. I have all the L glass lenses that cover 17mm to 200mm. But, when I go to personal events, I take only my 28-135. Works faithfully, I always get all the photos I want and I am always ecstatic with the color and excellent consistant sharpness. My personal photos are more important to me than the professional photos that I take, and the 28-135 IS USM is my choice for all personal events.

I think you would be happier with the 28-135 as a walk around lens. Definitely going to cover most shots. The IS is a huge advantage. It's also fairly small and light for what it does. That's what I have and it is what I recomend.

I take it back, 17-40L and 50mm 1.8mkII

the 17-40L will be my new lense.
