I have processed my RAW files from my 20D in CS2. Why can't I open RAW files in CS2 from my new 40D??? I did an update just today, and I still can't open RAW files from the 40D.
Please help!!!
Thanks!

CS2 can't read 40D files. See FAQ for workaround.

CS2 will not be able to open your 40D RAW files as they require a version of ACR that is only compatible with CS3. You can download the DNG converter and convert your CR2 files to DNG and then open them in CS2 though.

What version was your update?

Thanks for the quick responses! This was the first place I thought of to go to for help, naturally.
Tim, I read the FAQ. Thanks for not making me feel stupid for not doing a search before I asked the question. I guess I was pretty rattled and not thinking.
Mike - thanks - I downloaded the converter. It converted about 40 RAW files and it took a while. I don't know what I'll do with hundreds of files from a wedding shoot!
Doug, I don't know. A friend did it for me yesterday and it was the latest version.
I don't understand why CS2 can't be updated to process RAW files from the newer cameras. That pretty much forces you to update PS!
I love POTN!

Yup. Or look into other software. You can use DPP which came with your 40D or perhaps try Lightroom or another software.

It's a not so sneaky ploy by Adobe to get people to part with their hard earned cash. I've been using PS7 for years, and it's always been up to the tasks I asked of it when PPing my photos - until I started shooting in RAW. I couldn't get on with DPP and PS7 won't even let you open a DNG conversion, so I had no choice but to upgrade, or continue shooting in JPG.

Its always amazing to me that people would blame Adobe for this situation rather than point the finger at the camera manufacturers who are the real culprits. Why is it that every camera produces a different variant of Raw? Why is it that CR2 files vary so widely? Would you expect that a JPEG vary based on the camera that produced it? All RAW files are based on the TIFF 6 standard yet they are all different. The camera manufacturers can surely standardize their formats if they really wanted to do so.

If "a while" means "more then a few minutes", then...

Upgrade the computer ;)

Because RAW is the RAW data that comes from the sensor. It's more work to make DNG files, and there's little immediate return for them. With DNG going into a standardisation process maybe some will move to DNG.
DNG is the same RAW data, with metadata to describe how to interpret the RAW data.

Sorry, but that's humbug.
For one, you could have used one of the plenty other available Raw converters out there... DPP, C1LE, C1, SilkyPix, LightZone, or one of the free available ones.
It's like complaining PS5 cannot open afile you got sent by someone using PSCS3, because it's a layered tiff file, containing smart objects and some new adjustment layers....
It's not PS5 that's at fault. The "technology" was created later then the software, and you choose to use old software.
The software works fine, if you know the limitations...

Not sure on this one. Every camera has (slightly?) different specs. For instance the dyes of the Bayer filter vary (at least between manufacturers, I suppose they might also between models)
If those changes are big, I can imagine some drawbacks if the files could be opened by an "incompatible" version of ACR for instance.
I do agree that it would be nice if at least the option to open existed. (With a warning: "Here be Dragons" or so ;))

Rene and Tim, All true points. What it essentially boils down to is that we don't mind spending money upgrading camera equipment because we assume each new iteration contains improved technology and the resultant image files are better. But at the same time it can also be inferred that many people don't think that Adobe should improve their software and technology.
The whole thing makes little sense. People make conscious choices to use old technology/software and then complain.
