I couldn't fit what I'm actually trying to get form this thread in the title, but I'm looking to find some of the pictures they show right before they go to commercial break - they usually feature the host and/or the band from that night's show. They're usually processed to be faux HDR-esque. I wanted to find some examples and had a really hard time. I was wondering if anyone knew where to find them or how they actually achieve them. Of course, I can guess as to what they do, but it'd be fun to know.

Does anyone know the pictures I'm talking about or am I crazy?

The photographer is Mary Ellen Matthews, who has been shooting the SNL photos since 1999. She uses a lot of different styles. It looks like a combination of lighting and PP on all of them:

The "faux-HDR" look is mostly hard lighting, including a ring light. You could search for the faux-Dave Hill or Lucis look, but it's a pale imitation of the real look of hard lighting using multiple lights.

ha, what are you talking about harroz?

and Pam, thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. But while I agree that there's a lot of lighting used to make these shots, a lot of them are also heavily processed. Thanks.
