View Full Version : POTN NW Meet - Columbia River Gorge

30th of July 2008 (Wed), 13:43
Any of you Pacific Northwest Photographers want to get together for a Columbia River Gorge shoot? We can do several waterfalls, landscapes, and dinner/drinks afterwards at a local pub.
I'm suggesting the weekend of August 16th (edit: removed other dates as this seems to work for the most so far). If we get enough people interested I'll post details for where/when to meet and local hotels.

sorry, the 16th. The following weekend is the NW art and air show and we always shoot that. (the weekend before labor day is a possible option too)

That's six of us so far. Plenty for a POTN meet, though more would be welcome. I'll provide the logistics for where to meet and hotel information if anyone needs it. The next question is do we want an morning or late afternoon-evening shoot?

I would say morning... a better chance of fewer terrorists, er, tourists (same thing ;-) ) out and about -- they typically show up later.
I also think the morning air seems fresher!

Mark,
I think myself and my son (easypic10D) will be available on the 16th. We just did the Gorge about a month ago, I'll tell you now I'm not hiking to the top of Multinomah falls again any time soon.
Funny thing happened while hiking up the trail last month, was a beautiful and very warm day, and I kept leap frogging past a couple when they took rest breaks and they past me while resting, after getting about 3/4 the way to the top I saw them coming and stated"Jeez, I wish I would have paid the 10 dollars and took the elevator." The look on their face was priceless, fish on, hook line and sinker!!!!!

I probably won't do the hike to the top of Multnomah Falls either (did it last year). But I do love shooting in the Gorge, especially with lots of other photography minded folks.
Now, about that elevator......

Speaking of falls, hiking and the Gorge, there are trails to "lesser falls" such as Bridal Veil that I've never took the time to explore because I'm always rushing to some other location! But they may be fun to check out...? There are several along the "Historic Highway".
Any other specific spots you had in mind, Mark?

I may be available depending on the time the group gets together. I'm supposed to be building a fence that weekend, but might be able to eke out a little time to go shoot...

I'm up for most of them. Bridal Veil is a good one that isn't much of a hike - Latrourell is always fun and I lke Shepard's Dell. I would really like to hike back to Oneonta Falls (back past Horsetail), but we'll have to see about that.

So I guess I will miss out on this shoot, but hopefully next time!:) I'll look forward to seeing the pictures though, I have taken pictures at the waterfalls several years ago and always planned to go back.

Well, from what I understand, we're looking at a morning shoot (how early hasn't been determined). As far as a meeting place goes, we could meet at Vista House at Crown Point, or we could meet somewhere just off the Interstate near the National Historic Highway.

Not a bad idea. Those of you that agree, can PM me your cell number, and in response, I'll PM mine back. That way, I'll have a master list, and everyone that plans to attend will have at least one number they can call if needed.

We could do lunch at the McMenamins in Troutdale, a pleasant place not too far down-river -- or we could go up river to Hood River with the watersports and the plethora of cool places there. Whichever way we roam is fine with me.

The Holiday Inn Express you'd mentioned in the other thread didn't show any availability for me if I tried to check-in Friday night for one night. I didn't really do much more searching, but I'm sure I'll be able to find something.
My play is to overnight somewhere Friday into Saturday so I'm not completely wiped out by the end of the day Saturday and my drive back home. Sushi Okalani on 1st and Oak is excellent. Happy hour @ 5:00 is a great deal and the chefs are some of the best kiteboarders in the Hood.
Also, Brian's Pourhouse has a cool basement/backyard bar that can be fun as well. Good staff, food and brews.

That give us 6 plus me and I'm brining a buddy of mine along. So we should have 8 shooters total.
I'll pack an ice chest of bottled water and drinks in my truck to help keep us hydrated. :)

I just looked at the weather on Sat. (actually for the next three days) It's hovering around (or over) 100 all 3 days. So bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Though in the gorge, there is a lot of shade but oi.
I don't do well in heat.
I was just going to ask if it was going to be hotter down there than it will be up here. Up here the forecast is actually for it to cool down a little after Friday, with today and tomorrow being the scorchers.
In any event, I'll be sure to be prepared for some sunshine.

I want to recommend a trip to Oneotna. It is brisk and refreshing and a short walk back to the falls (1/4 of a mile at most I would imagine). That said, we need to get there early. Luckily, it is only about 5 miles from vista house :).
I was there today and it was a bit rough in a couple of spots but easily doable by all.
Just putting it out there :).
Teaser from today.

Made it home a couple of hours ago. It was very nice to meet up with some new (to me) faces, and to see the Boring Boys in action as a pair is an experience not to be missed.
Loading shots up now to see what I got. ;)
Stevenson was a little windier, but no windsurfers or kite boarders. There were some hobie cats way out in the river, and a Laser Regatta of some sort going on. The Lasers were fun to watch. More on that after I get a chance to look at my shots. (I have to add some drama. :D )

Hey All!
Fun time yesterday!
I got a little productive, messed around with my shots and uploaded a collection -- you can see them on my PBase site by going here (http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/potn_gorge_meetup_aug_16_08).
You'll note I had fun playing with close crops of my shots, with the "moving water" effects -- in fact every shot I took was with slow shutter speeds, which played some havoc when you photogs were part of the scene:)!
Anyway, here are a couple samples:

Hello,
Great to meet you all - it was certainly a fun way to start the weekend.
I've not had much time to sort through or otherwise deal with the images I took due to more traditional weekend activities . . . but here's the image I've liked the best so far.
Minimal editing - crop, white balance, some exposure control (lightroom). Comments and feedback most welcome.

Thanks, guys.
Looking back at what everyone else saw that I didn't is such a huge learning experience. Tony's shot under the bridge is a great example (and a great shot). After last year's trip around Seattle I went back and redid some of the walk with an entirely different lens than during the meet, because I'd seen so many other details in some of the shots posted that I'd completely missed the first time through.

Forgot to follow up on this. . .
The Lasers I saw were part of the Laser Masters North American Championships. While watching and shooting them, I happened to run into the wife of one of the competitors. I helped her spot her husband's boat, and got a few shots of him in action. Turns out that he wasn't just another competitor, he won! She's been in contact with me about buying some prints as a way of celebrating his victory and surprising him with some shots he doesn't know exist. :D
