Is it possible to recover pictures from an SD card after doing a low level formatting?

depends if you've taken any pictures after the format which may have overwritten the earlier data. I've used this software successfully on CF cards: http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/smart_recovery/info.htm?language=1
"tis free and reasonably simple to use. Good idea to try it out before you need it however...

There is also a program called Zero Assumption recovery that works well and is free for image recovery. Sandisk also packages rescue software with thier Extreme card readers (and cards too I believe. I haven't bought nay of the Extreme cards to know for sure though).
Not sure if they work after low-level formats though.

Sorry to have taken over this other persons Q, but can anyone in the USA suggest a Data recovery company that can retrieve stuff off a card?
My friend (Dare I mention the brand name! spit spit) went to Yellowstone N park, his original card went 'strange', bought a new one which worked OK, but can't view anything on the computer as it just gives him "Format Card?" message.
Any Ideas please? I'd hate to be in that position, and lose all my holiday "snaps".

I've used PhotoRescue (http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/) MANY times to retrieve data from the ancient cards we use at the newspaper where I work. I just used it on a 32mb (yes, MB!) Smartmedia from a Olympus Camedia C-2500 circa 1999.
And yes, it works on cards that were accidently reformatted by graphic artists who hadn't had their coffee yet!
It's cheap and you can try it out to see if it will find your photos before you pay for it.

Read up at the zero assumption website, but I think it tells you to format a card if the computer will not recognize the card.
You also must use a card reader in most cases.

I am using Sandisk Extreme III 4GB cards. They come with rescue software that is very effective (at least on their own cards; I have not had the chance to try it on other brand cards). I have used it to recover all images from a card that I accidently formatted before taking the images off it, as well as to recover most (approx 150 images out of 165) that were unreadable by Windows after the Err CF warning came up on the camera and the card went partially bad/corrupt. It even recovered one image that was half there and half just plain grey. Thankfully I have only ever needed it twice and it has worked well each time.
Someone else was correct when they said that they key is to not write any new data over top of the "formatted" data.
