OK, here're two shots taken today with the sun still out -- anything over about 1 second comes out totally washed out.

Compare these below to these.

What can I do to shoot during the day and still get the smoothness of a dusk/night 10-20 second exposure? I set f/ to 22 (max) and had the camera compensate for the light, but it was still not good enough. These are untouched other than shrinking for posting.

Is the only thing to do to get a dark filter?

You need a polizer for the lens

You could also try a neutral density filter. You would want a fairly strong one for a 20 sec daytime exposure.

Alright, already. Where is this beautiful place? Vegas?

No, he needs a ND filter. A polarizer will act as a weak ND but for his image he needs a fairly strong ND filter.

Ah! OK, sounds good to me. I was thinking of the Tiffen .9, which ought to allow me about 7-12 seconds of exposure time... sound about right to you?

Thanks, fellas.

Oh, Pugdaddy -- this is at Caltech

I don't understand the need for a long exposure.

He's looking to blur the fountains and I'm guessing they come on in sequence with a second delay between each one or somethin like that.

If you dont mind making the aperture tighter you can do that. But an ND filter will probally be best bet.

ISO 100.........max aperture........and an ND filter should get the job done.

Well, I tried 100-iso (I usually don't shoot anything else if I can help it) with a Tiffen ND.9, f/22 and I still couldn't do more than about 1 1/2 seconds.>:(

I'll try again today at around 4:45pm -- that ought to work.

you could possibly stack multiple ND's.

need to watch for vignetting (darkening of the corners) as well as slight degradation of img quality due to putting more stuff in front of the lens/sensor.

OK, here's one with the ND... 25sec exposure. Came out OK; I'll check the rest out and see if there're other good ones.

If you are still having problems (I think it looks pretty good, though) you might want to try Image Stacker (http://www.tawbaware.com/imgstack.htm) for the effect you want. I have not tried it, but the demo images on the site look pretty good.
