First, if this is posted in the wrong Section, please move it!

I just made my avatar. But, I thought I'd go nuts before I got it done. I kept trying to do it in Elements 3, but the stupid resolution kept showing up too high. I even copied a 7K image, ran it through Elements 3 to crop, and resize, and saved it as B&W. That resulted in a 12+K final image! I finally gave up and did it using some stupid program called Photo Impression. No problem.

I'm not sure, but I think the problem with Elements 3 is that it uses a minimum sector size when saving a file. If so, that means that you always wind up with a file at least as large as a sector on your disk, regardless of how small the file was to begin with. Is that correct? If not, what is the story?

I'm not so sure about your theory about files being as large as a sector on disk - I don't think Photoshop works on the file system on such a low level.

There can be lots of other explanations. Maybe Photoshop saves extra information with the image, such as an ICC color profile. Make sure that the "ICC Profile" box in the Save As dialog is unchecked.

Save it as a GIF file instead of JPG - it will be smaller.

The very same file saved out of Elements 2/3 as a JPG (same JPG quality settings) will be MUCH larger than the same file saved out of MS Paint, or in my case, Photo Impression. So, switching to GIF format doesn't really answer the question.

The term you are looking for is "clusters" not "sectors" There are many clusters but few sectors. A very small file smaller than your disk cluster size will always take up a cluster size. A cluster is minumum data size to be saved.

Thanks, Hellashot! Is that cluster size specified in the application or the BIOS? In other words, could it be Elements 2/3 that wants a larger cluster? If so, that would be the explanation of my problem.

In PSE2, in File>Save For Web, set your widest dimension to 70. That will solve your problem.
