Well, i had a go at it last night too...
quite pleased with the results, but was surprised that the flash limited the exposure time to 1/200s.
the first one is what i imagined i would get if it all went right, but the 2nd came out of the blue [pun intended]

I like both the shots but the second the best for that crazy yellow and red splodge. What is it?

I agree with Jyoti - it's a common shot but that object makes it interesting :)
1/200 is the flash sync speed, you can't go faster on a 300D. I think a 20D can go a little faster. The flash sticky in the EOS forum should explain it.

Cool shots! I'm curious....what body of water is this? Sink/tub/somewhere outside?

cheers for the comments folks...
The container was a glass fruit bowl, with a small motif on the side, which you can see in the second image... i'll take a pic in the morning and post it here.
I sat the bowl on a blue napkin to try and make a nicer colour for the water, and contrast with the motif.
Thanks for the link Tim :)

Thanks! I was playing around after I saw your shot and tried to get a good droplet photo and haven't had success. What object did you drop in the water? I tried droplets of water and discovered that's not heavy enough to get a large splash that I want. I have'nt tried anything else yet but was just curious what you used.

Both are very nice shots. I find the color in the second one especially nice. Great job!

I like the second one. The column of water looks good. The coloured reflections are effective. Some of the best shots happen by accident.
The 1/200 sec is the shutter speed of the camera required to sync the flash. The actual exposure time is determined by the flash duration. It is probably 1/1000 or even shorter.

cheers guys :) I can't wait for summer, but i must admit, it's fun being creative indoors too.

i was using a coctail stick to drop the water, as then i could see the drop forming and have prior warning to it falling.
I've a few other ideas for the droplets, and hope to test one of them out in the coming evenings... if anything decent comes out, i'll post it up.

I'm going to give it a go this weekend... any tips on how to hit the shutter at just the right time? I just got myself a shutter release cable and external flash cable... either way it'll be a pretty expensive picture to take ;)

Tim, i found that i was simply using a manual method of timing. And I was also manually hitting the shutter, within about 3 or 4 shots, i had the sucess rate of catching the drop in one form or another at about 70-90%... however, due to the manual [me] control of placing the drop, i was sometimes in or out of the DOF.. this reduced my hit rate to more like 50%
hope that helps and let us know how you get on.

I use a remote timer set to take 6 shots at .1 apart then I start to drip the water when the first flash goes off. I set my flash at 1/16 so it can keep up with the camera. here a couple of the one's I did with that set up.

Very nice! Did you have the PC controlling the camera or something?

I used the canon remote TC80-N3,so you can set the time duration and # od shots that you want.

Flyfisher- that 1st one resembles a dolphin and the second one reminds me of a waterspout caused by a tornado ! Nice effects !
