I have been browsing online quite a bit and have noticed that a lot of photographers use natural light only, and shoot on location rather than in a studio. I am just wondering, what are the pros and cons of that type of biz vs having a studio and artificial lighting?

Studios are nice when it's raining or dark outside?

LOL! This wasn't a trick question! ;) I guess I am just curious why some do only location and others prefer studio. Thanks!

Some do it because they have a real preference for the "look" of the natural light, some do it because they don't know how to use a flash, and some do it because they can't afford a studio, or even a flash

you dont need a studio to use studio lighting. i like shooting natural light for candids and such where you only want to carry minimal gear. however, using studio lights (or speedlites) outdoors on-location gives you way more control on how you want your image to look.

Some do it because they have a real preference for the "look" of the natural light, some do it because they don't know how to use a flash, and some do it because they can't afford a studio, or even a flash And then there's boredom. Sometimes you just want to do something different.
IMO, everyone should have an alternate technique tucked into their kit.

Why limit yourself? I say do both.
I do mostly location, but with lights. But I do it because I DESPISE most of the backgrounds that are available. Hideous is a kind work for most of them. So I made the transition and do environmental shots.
