I have just had a Canon iP4000 printer delivered - its all set up and working fine.
Canon ink cartridges (5) were of course supplied : as usual the setting up process will have 'hammered' the cartridges quite hard and it won't be long before I need to replace them.

Opinions vary as to the wisdom of using compatible ink cartridges - can the ink in the 'genuine ' cartridges have such a magic:rolleyes: quality that only that ink is safe to use without damaging the ink jet nozzles? The difference in price between 'genuine' and compatible is quite extraordinary and I begrudge paying Canon's price unless it is definitely risky to use compatible inks.

The following is a quote from an advert in Digital Camera, the UK photo Magazine, by Premier Ink Supplies.

"In a comprehensive test of Epson compatible ink cartridges, conducted by Digital Photo Magazine in August 2004, cartridges from 8 manufacturers were tested. Our cartridges were the ONLY Epson compatible ink cartridges awarded a full 5 star rating, and received the prestigious 'Best in Test' award.

Digital Photo Magazine's verdict was that our cartridges 'offer the most natural colours we've seen in budget inks and come closest to producing the colour palette of the Epson inks. They provide a decent greyscale for the black and white enthusiast and give some really bright, zingy colours throughout the range....an extremely good buy and truly deserve our 'Best in Test'

The supplier also guarantees 'and quality and the cost of any maintenance work'

Although Epson cartridges are focused on here, presumably, the remarks would aply equally to other brands, including canon

I would be interested to know members views on this subject.

Hi Colliewalker,
As you're in the UK I can recommend JetTec cartridges, made in Boston,Lincs by the largest manufacturer of compats in Europe.
I've been using them in my ageing BJC8200 for some 4 years now, with only one possible faulty cartridge, which was replaced without question, not by 1 tank but a complete set of 6!
From Canon's cartridge compatability chart I see the i4000 uses the BCI-6 tanks and also the BCI-3e black.
I know that JetTec do compats for the BCI-6, but am not certain about the BCI-3e; logon to www.bogofink.co.uk and see what you can find.
Hope this helps.
