View Full Version : How do you feel about hiring another photog?

Getting married next summer (06) and I am finding it difficult with the photographer choices. I am not a perfect photog by far. But I still have opinions on what I like and in several ways think is right to do things. I may have to just flat out stay away from the photog part. I probably have turned off a few that we have talked too with too many questions about equipment and how the prints are to be made (IE worse than the demanding mother in law some have to deal with :) ).
How do handle paying for something you believe or wish you could do yourself? Basically letting loose of the shutter button and letting someone else have a go.

Ask Bloo Dog, he is the expert on weddings and has some interesting tales to tell.

Resign yourself to the fact that you can't be in the ceremony and still photograph it. Then tell your fiancee that you're going to try to stay completely out of the photographer's way before, during, and after the ceremony (except to pose as needed, with explicit permission for her, and the photographer, to dope-slap you if you open your trap) so's to avoid alienating him by pushing your style on him. Point out that you're making this sacrifice (consider how much you could be learning about wedding photography!) for her, not because you're trying to shirk your responsibilities, but so things go smoothly.
If she doesn't buy that, point her at some of Bloo Dog's horror stories, and ask if that's what she wants to happen.

The photographer is actually going to be hired by the soon to be mother-in law. She wants a specific person to do the photos. Her parents are not paying for the weding. We are, but since she is being so demanding about the photog we said ok you hire her then. And she immediately so ok I will then. I have seen some of her work on her web site and really have no complaint. But it is so hard to keep shut.
The photogs we originally talked to seemed to be a little put off by a couple of my questions (probably thought I would be a trouble client, which just may be the case  :D ). I have never met the lady that is wanted, not sure if she has even been approached yet. But she has done work for the family in the past.
Next question. If you were shooting a wedding and the groom asked you to take a picture or two using his camera  what would the reply be? Camera would be a 4x5 and if necessary, I would do the initial set up.

You're getting married in the summer of '06? A lot can happen between now and then.
I mean, there's time to train Uncle Harry.
The one point I made and is clear I believe is the photog will also shoot the reception, at least fisrt dance and cake cutting. After that, point and shoots on the tables will have the candids (and not so candids :D ) that the party guests will take.
I have been asked many times and turned down Weddings. Including my own brother and sisters (parents furious at me at the time, sisters was fine, brothers was a horor story - should have done it :( ).
I am just going to have to put my happy face on and go with the flow. The lady they are trying to get has been at it for a while. So I am positive she is way more capable than I am.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but all I'll say is that the wedding ceremony took place in a small mediterranean country. Its claim to fame is its notoriously bad cuisine. It's so bad that even the natives complain about it.
'nuff said.
You got married in Arkansas? ;)
