I just want to share this piece of equipment from Dell. I received it last night after ordering it from LegendMicro for a whopping price of 650 USD. For the same size, this is a few hunderd bucks cheaper than the Apple version.
I came from an 18 inch LCD so I didn't think this would be a huge upgrade......but WHOA!!! This monitor is AWESOME!!! The image quality is just ASTOUNDING!!! And the best part is when you edit your photos.........the extra workspace is just GREAT!!! Another plus is that you can position the monitor horizontally or vertically..............surfing the web in the vertical position is an eye opener!!! no more scrolling down and down...........everything single info is there...........its especially great for this forum.
This is a bargain guys..............don't walk............RUN and get yours today.
The specs are in the Dell website............
If you guys have any questions.......dont hesitate to ask..........I will take some pics later tonight and post it here so you guys can see what I'm talking about..........
I'm just sooo excited.........I have to share it!!!:D

That looks like an amazing value, and the resolution is the same as the Apple 20" too at 1680x1050. I'm not sure it's any bigger than a 18" or 19" LCD in terms of area though because it's widescreen, but the widescreen is probably a better layout for photo editing because you can keep your PS toolbars on the side of a 4x6 aspect ratio photo that is full height on that monitor. I'd like to see some pictures of it with Photoshop open and a photo blown up to full screen to see how much area is left on the sides.
I'm seeing a price of $750 when I follow your link, though.

YES!!! From my previous 1280x1075 resolution..........not every detail is present..........now, viewing my shots at this resolution......I noticed a lot of OOOFFFF shots!!! This monitor is very unforgiving!!! Shots from my 50 f1.4 prime though are just STUNNING!!! SHARP SHARP SHARP!!! Now I know why primes are addictive!!!

Yes, the specs are similar to the Apple version........EXCEPT, this monitor is height adjustable and it rotates to 90 degrees!! It also has a 1:600 contrast ratio, so it is BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT!!!
Dell prices go up and down .........you kinda have to catch them when they're giving away those deals...........I bought my monitor from Legend Micro at www.legendmicro.com (http://www.legendmicro.com). If you shop around, you'll find some good deals on this monitor.......its quite popular.

I was actually thinking of buying another computer from Dell. But this information make me a little upset. This is like the 3rd item from them that I have found cheaper from another source than them ($100 less than them). Now before you think I am off my rocker. I have a little history with Dell and their parts prices to REPEAT customers. I have a Dell laptop (high end not cheapie $3,200 for it), old desktop that has been replaced by the laptop, and bought a digital camera. Just after the waranty ended on the laptop the battery just died. Would only go 5 minutes even though it said fully charged.
So I called Dell and they were very friendly. Sold me a new battery for $150 dollars plus shipping. :( Then twice the power supply broke on me. I had to pay $75 each time. Well about 3 months after I bought the last power supply it failed. I went to Dells site and they didn't have the power supply in stock. Then I found out that it was actually recalled a while before. They SOLD me new ones knowing full well that at least one should have been replaced by the recall. After some searching I found 4 stores that sold the battery, and power supplies, for almost half of what Dell charges! New items in sealed Dell boxes!!
They have initial low prices (not the cheapest but low). But if you need anything parts wise, they really sock it to you. Really not sure if I should continue to buy from them.

benhasajeep - I always cross reference my prices with www.pricegrabber.com (http://www.pricegrabber.com/). - then, when I see I good deal, I cross reference the vendor with www.resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com). And BTW, I never buy any accessories from Dell - they always charge a premium (Again, unless you have a coupon......).

Rotating is an excellent feature. I use a 3D LCD arm now that hovers over my recliner (yes, I'm a lazy b*stard), so I'd really like to be able to do that.
Does your current graphics card support 1600x1050? I'm not sure if my Matrox does. Another cool setup I've used in the past is dual 20" displays setup as one huge desktop at the equivalent of 3200x1200, using two 1600x1200 displays. I gave that up when I switched to the LCD arm, but a lot of times I miss it.
If that goes back down to $650 I'm not sure I will be able to resist the urge.

I have a mainstream Nvidia GeFore video card (2 yrs old)............it did not support it at first, but after I went to the webside and downloaded the newest driver, everything was smooth sailing..........BTW, I've seen this monitor go as low as 588 in the Dell website...........this was when they had the 25% off plus 10% off coupon...I'm kicking myself now for not buying it then.......

Wow, that looks great!!!!!
Does the desktop automatically rotate when you rotate the screen like some of the Tablet PCs do?
If the monitor was connected to an LCD arm instead of the base, would it still rotate?

Hey Philip..........I do two clicks from my Screen options to do the portrait orientation.............the LCD rotates smoothly when attached to the base......(I'm not too sure about the LCD arm, is that when you attach it to the wall??).............Rotating the screen though takes less than 5 seconds with hardly any effort...........(This is also great when typing work documents).......!!!
Hope this helps.

The Dell UltraSharp 2001FP always got very good reviews, I guess this screen is at least as good - it looks great and not too expensive! I've looked it up on the Dutch Dell website, it costs about € 713 here - not bad! (though I'll have to save for a while......) :)

I just checked my LCD arm and it doesn't really matter. Any LCD I put on my LCD arm will be able to rotate 90 degrees, so I guess I just need the software to rotate the desktop.

Another key differnce between the Dell 2001 and 2005 (aside from the wide aspect ratio) is that the 2005 has a 600:1 image contrast ratio......as oppsed to the 2001 which has a ratio of 400:1............of course, this is just a minor wiggle.............

Jan 1st I ordered my 2001fp for $588.20 shipped. A large number of people in a tech forum I'm a member of bought their 2005fpw for $under $600. Just keep an eye on the deal and coupon sites for Dell coupon codes (which are often stackable with general Dell site discounts or additional coupons).
Congrats on your 2005fpw!! That's a sweet monitor.

You may not need software to make ur monitor vertical
1) I have a 19inch samsung monitor and i can access vertical display via the monitor buttons and it will flip the screen for me, so i believe this is a function of the actual monitor (Where it just rotates and horizontally condenses ur width so that it looks vertical (although this may make ur desktop look oddly condensed and altered if it doesnt not support any automatic setting adjustments.
2) The only software you would need if it came down to it, would be a driver upgrade because i know for all Nvidia and ATI users the lastest drivers support vertical display (which will adjust ur settings correctly so ur display does not condense, rather resizes so nothing is unproportional) I have two ATI 9XXX series cards (9200 and 9800) and both with the latest catalyst driver support vertical display. I am pretty sure the catalyst driver supports the older 8XXX and 7XXX, so if u got a slightly older ATI card, the driver should take care of this. Nvidia, im not sure if there drivers support vertical display on older cards.
2b) You also may already have the ability and not know it. To check right click on ur desktop, go to properties, then the settings tab, then click advanced. This will bring up ur video card userface. For my video card i just go under "Rotation" tab and there is an option to make ur display vertical. Then i just have to change my resolution aspect ratio and waallaaa. Differs a bit from card to card, but should be similar.
Hope any of that helps. If it doesnt, i guess u do need third party software, unless Dell provides it.

Thanks Avalonthas. I just checked my desktop setting, and there's no desktop rotate option. I'm running an old 3dfx Vodoo3 card right now, but I have a dual-DVI Matrox G400 sitting on the shelf that I've been meaning to move over to this machine, so hopefully their drivers support it. If not, maybe I'll consider an NVidia card.
I've been playing around without the software, just rotating my LCD when I am browsing been portrait and landscape pictures, and it works great. The resolution difference is huge. 853x1280 for portrait shots with the LCD rotated compared to 680x1024 with the LCD in lanscape mode. That's nearly 33% resolution increase!!! Without the software to properly rotate the desktop, though, it's nearly impossible to operate the mouse, because up means left and left means down. I tried holding the mouse sideways to compenstate, but that seemed very awkward..
Roanjohn,
Did your Dell monitor come with some special software for this? And is it Dell specific?

............No, it is controled through my Nvidia video card. Under properties (Rotate 90 degrees) and click YES.
Check your video card driver.

Hmm........it should support it.............have you tried upgrading to a new driver?? I just can't see how a card cannot support this format.

If you want to spend a lot less then something like this is a good choice.
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009030
And bear in mind that LCD prices are falling rapidly as production facilities constructed over the last few years are at last starting to bring products to the market. Prices on LCD monitors and TVs are expected to drop by at least a third by year end, and some places estimate over 50% price drop by this time next year. So if you need one you need one, but if you only want one it will pay to wait.

I'm only using the Vodoo card out of laziness. I have a Matrox G450 dual DVI with a Matrox RT2500 real time MPEG-2 encoder that I've just been too lazy to install.
I'm running a ViewSonic 19" LCD right now, but I want something larger and with CRT-ish colors like an Apple Cinema Display, which are a little too expensive for me right now.
The price drop on LCDs has been pretty amazing in the past year like you said. I'm starting to have dreams of flat panel displays replacing all my TVs in the house as well.

Same here. The TV in my front room is on its way out. Not sure how much longer its got left but its getting some color banding which probably means the emitter isn't tracking right. I'm just hoping that when it either fails or gets too bad to put up with I'll be able to replace it with a flat panel of some kind.
Oh, and I too have a computer with a VooDoo 3 2000 in it. Its my old Athlon 650 machine which gets used as my linux test box. I remember how impressed with it I was, and now look at how far 3D graphics have improved.
