I got an HP 7760 PhotoSmart printer for Christmas, and so far have been less then thrilled with the results. I'm thinking about returning it but don't know what to replace it with. I looked on the HP site and noticed that the 8450 model offers two more colors, but the same resolution (4800 dpi). Will that help, or should I try another brand? What do people think about the Photosmart line?

I don't have that particular model.. but I do have an HP Photosmart 7450.. with the six color ink technology. I'll tell you.. it's the best ink-jet photo printer that i've ever used.. and I've been through my fair share. One of the things that I have noticed with the HP printers is that the actual print settings really do what they are designed to do.. mainly the settings to enhance digital prints... One things that is a no-no is to overly sharpen, or de-speckle a picture in an editing program, then print it using the default photo settings... if you do this, make sure you turn all of the image adjusting functions on the printer off. (they are set to automatic by default - ie., sharpness, auto focus, auto redeye removal, etc).. Also.. the input dpi has a lot to do with the quality of your finished print.. I believe that the standard input resolution that the HP Photosmart line expects is 600dpi. Up from that would be the 4800 optimized mode which expects 1200dpi input images.. play around with it a little bit before you give up on it.. once you learn how to use the printer, you may find that the prints are absolutely beautiful on premium paper.
