there are times that i use "auto" in order to see what settings will be chosen and the shot comes out ok...However, if i put the camera in "manual" and use those same settings, the shot is NOT right, AT ALL...
Why is this??

Because you can't see what ISO setting is being used in auto mode. Your ISO setting in manual mode probably doesn't match.
Try using P mode instead. It uses the same exposure calculations but at the same ISO as M mode. Of course, in many cases you might just as well take the picture in P mode rather than transfer the settings to M mode.

What's NOT right about it? Like Doug said, make sure you are also setting the ISO the same.
Another thought, did the flash pop up in AUTO? In manual, you have to "manually" pop up the flash if you want it to fire.

Another problem with setting Manually from the Auto settings is that you are not being as creative with regards to choosing the aperture or shutter speed that you want.
With Auto modes the camera will set an aperture and shutter speed that it thinks will be best. Sometimes this is ok but on other occasions you may not get the best shutter speed for the shot you want to achieve or the best depth of field.
The way I work my camera is to set my aperture first, then set my shutter speed and if I cannot get a fast enough shutter speed I will up my iso until I do. Fire off a shot and then chimp and adjust shutter speed/iso until I get the exposure that I like.
