I was told the above the other day when I was shooting. I asked them why and they said I should turn off the shutter sound on my 20D as I was being a show off
We have compact digicams with fake shutter sounds to thank for that one!

just flip some switches and continue to shoot, if they still insist, just say, what shutter sound?

Put it on AI Servo & jpeg....by the time you are on frame 43, they've already got used to the sound.

A couple of my co-workers at my main job today were completely astonished at my 1Ds2's lack of:
1-Shooting video
2-A lens that comes with it
3-EVF
4-Built-in flash
5-Automatic mode.

If you shoot with a 20D in the forest and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound ? :)

I find it amazing how many people are sold on the gimmicks like video mode and digital zoom :-). I have an A75 but didn't buy it for either of these features, although I have used the movie mode a few times. Digital zoom I can do in photoshop if I want, which I don't :-) !
As to the noise, tell them you haven't got your hearing aid turned on, so need it loud :-) :-). Personally I like the shutter noise, it lets me know that I've taken the picture. I'd actually start to worry if I didn't hear it.

I am really glad that at my day job I work around a bunch of people who work with imaging sensors. They don't ask does it do video or why doesn't it come with a lens and some of them even understand that to get the best quality I have to enhance the image from a raw file first. Of course a few of them remember the days of light tables and film reels.
But I have overheard those in other places. At least 16+ MP still impresses people. 8) :) 8)

You could explain why it doesn't take video, either the correct version or the short version (ie "image quality").

when i was shooting the skateboard comp earlier this month, a guy with a coolpix p&s said 'dude, you should join the digital revolution. digital cameras are not expensive anymore'... i showed him some of the shots (http://www.pbase.com/iagrafx/sk8rs) i had taken, and he said 'oh...' :o then he asked me 'well why the hell do you have to use a flash in the daylight?'
aiyah!

Yeah, everyone thinks it is about the MP. I had someone try and tell me in a camera store that they would never consider a Canon 1D because such and such camera made such better images. I looked kind of stunned because there was NO comparison. He then went on to tell me that 4MP from the 1D could not compare to the higher pixel count of the amateur camera. I just smiled and said that I had heard that there were other factors that might make a difference.
Back in the film days I used to get this all the time.
I'm out shooting and someone is clearly watching me. Sometimes they have a 35mm camera. Sometimes they don't. Eventually they work their way over. Finally the come up to me. At the last second they turn away and mutter "Oh, I thought you had a Nikon". The first couple of times that happened I got a little preturbed. Then I found out that it happened to a LOT of Canon shooters.

Yes I make sure to compliment fellow Canon users
I was shooting some trees in a particulary scenic part of town a month ago, at least two other Canon shooters turned up, armed to the teeth with L glass, not a single Nikon shooter in sight - nice!

The only time I got stuck in one of these conversations was when I had CharlesU's 1D (yes,. Charles') and some joker had gotten the brand new 8MP Sony.....
First he was all drooling over the 1D,.. had never seen such a brutish digital..
then the inevitable "How many pixles does it have?"
When I told him 4,.. he was very pleased with himself for haveing a better camera. ;)
I just said,. "yeah.. but I need this old one so i can put my lenses on it. Sony doesn't make one that my lenses will fit"
It must be that particular camera Charles, it just seems to attract that kind of attention :)

A come back that might throw them in this situation (as soon as someone knows it is a digital camera they want to know how many MP is has) MP doesn't count as it uses a different type of pixels from a compact digicam (actually true CMOS vs CCD), and you can't actually compare them apples with apples.
Haven't had that issue yet, 8.2MP seems to be over the 'wow' threshold of most people

Yeah, I had a guy ask me if my 70-200 2.8 came with my D30. He said,
"Wow, did that lens come with that camera?"
I said, "What lens?"
Then he laughed and pulled the Mk II from behind his back with the biggest white telephone pole I have ever seen in real life...I think he was mocking my Sigma 70-200... ;-)
Actually I knew that guy, he's a pro who shoots at the school sporting events that I shoot at. It was my first day out with my new Sigma lens and he knew that I had just bought it. I love photographers...they are the best people ever!

I've had my 10D for over 18 months and have taken over 14 000 photos, so I'm starting to get comfortable with it. After the first few shots at a location I stop chimping, I sometimes take hundreds of shots without reviewing the images. The most common thing I get is people thinking that I'm shooting with film! Honestly, who would do that these days?
But to many people D-SLRs are not something that they have come across (or at least recognised). The sub $500 digicams are what most people think of when it comes to modern cameras.
I'll have to remember the next time someone realises that I am shooting digital and asks what megapixels my camera has, to say: "It's six megapixels, but they are a different type of megapixels to what the small cameras have, so it's better than the 8MPix compact cameras"

Yeah -try explaining why you have two flashes from your camera (when you do a Flash Exposure Lock).
Of course, pulling out the second flash unit usually shuts people up :)
Although. . last summer I came across a whole bunch of toursist photographing some elk at the side of the road. Since I was also a tourist (not to mention the road being blocked by gawking tourists), I took out my 70-200/4L and people politely moved out of the way so I could take my shot.

Real cameras make cool mechanical noises when you depress the shutter and don't have live preview LCD screens :p
Do people actually forget that quickly, digicams have only really been mainstream for three years! They have been around longer, but hadn't really caught on yet.
Tell them to try and use their Live Preview screen in the middle of a sunny day.
(OK I own a camera with a live preview screen, it is a real camera too!)
