Well, this maybe sort of a pointless thread, but it kinda excited me watching it... I'm watching shark week on Discovery Channel, I noticed that one of the scientists studying great white sharks had a 1D with a 70-200 lens. Ha ha, so it's Canon for the win!

Well, we're all in the same boat, aren't we?

Or perhaps the same kettle of fish?

*Groooooooaaaaaaaaaaan~*

The 70-200mm is an awesome lens line up.

'tis a fishy tale indeed, sure does he use it to club 'em on the nose to prevent attack?

This morning I was watching Austin Stevens the snake guy, & he was using what looked like an xti with a 24-70. He was searching for dragons but happened upon some snakes..............

Few years ago I would have never noticed this..................................

Interesting point. Since this obsession started, the maker's name is the first things I look for when I see an SLR in a move or tv programme ;)

A lot of the explorers on Nat Geo/Discovery use Canon. It's hard to miss, but I know the feeling you get.

I don't know if it was the crew or videographers/photographers for the deadliest catch, but one of them had an L lenses.

I know, eh?? To think, there are some poor poor people out there using such a markedly inferior brand! It makes me feel so sorry for them!!
On a similar note, did I spy an EOS 3 in the Dark Knight?

One of the funniest advertising things I have ever seen was the Kentucky Derby photographers. All were wearing Nikon vests and most were shooting with white lenses.

that was an awesome show. the guy who went out on the whale carcass had a plastic bag over his camera.

here the guy probably had a 50/50 chance of being knocked off the carcass and eaten by great whites but he still protected his canon gear :D!

Haha, yeah, that's what I was thinking... but also, it looked like he was shooting with an L lens and hopefully he had a 5D or a 1D attached, so that plastic baggie was sort of redundant. But I guess if he didn't, that baggie would have been a smart idea (and very clever)!

So if he was using a super tele and did fall off and the shark ate the camera.....
would that be an act of cannibalism?
(a great white eating a great white)
Sorry.
It was the only shark joke i could mako that.

I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a Canon product on Discovery. I'm used to watching for certain product placement in movies, particularly. Admittedly, I was a Nikon fan before POTN, and would remember appearances in films. The most vivid to my memory was "The Omen" and what looked like the 80-400VR and the D2X.

at the start of todays Hungarian grand prix the cameras panned to a group of photographers. and the amount of large white glass on display was scary
along with all the 1ds and lenses thrown all over the dusty floor.
these guys have no respect for there gear

its not really respect, I think they are just using it how it was built to be used. Lots of times getting the "shot" that you will get paid for means you have to be quick.

I've seen a monkey use a canon.

Brands don't matter. Show me your pictures.

So what? Are you calling yourself a monkey? Because I like to think of myself as a human being with some dignity and creativity who chose to do photography as his passion and have some pride in his equipment.

And I'm sorry for such a rebuttal, but since I'm new to this forum, and new to any type of decent equipment other than a kit lens, and awed by the wonderful photos and art on this forum... I'd like to make some small talk with some wonderful and talented people here. I'm sorry I can't talk about having the right settings for this, or showing a photo that everyone appreciates and praises, or talking about fancy-schmancy techniques. I'm only learning. And on top of that, I'm only learning from what I can on this forum (which I have learned a GREAT deal) and on the internet.

So instead of showing everyone every c*-tastic photo I have just so that I can waste people's time in showing me how to do basic composing and setting simple settings... I rather learn passively by myself until I feel like I can contribute and truly start learning advance techniques by people who have experience.

But you asked for pictures, so here they are:

Two shark photos taken at the Long Beach Aquarium through some glass or plastic. I didn't have my CPLs yet so there's a pronounced reflection.

And again, I'm sorry for starting some small talk and trying to contribute the little I have.

Surprising set up, I'm sure in the old episodes he used to a midrange canon zoom on a film body.... The last episode I saw before I moved to Europe. Austin was climbing and dropped his camera. The first thing to pop into my mind was, "I wonder if he'll finally go digital?" so I guess the xti answers that.

Ahhh you're right. I remember an episode where he ran out of film shooting a snake. Was def a silver bodied film camera.

Cheers

Well, I do monkey around a lot with my cameras.

My point is that the camera and the lens matter NOT for the art of photography. It's exciting to get a new lens, but it's not like you designed the lens - that's something to be proud about.

And I'd rather you be posting pictures and asking on how to improve rather than just praising gear.

Good luck with your photography

Hey Doc, I'm sorry if I seemed like a donkey. Again, I just wanted to have something to talk about, albeit something so insignificant. But, if none of us praise our gear, then why is there a dedicated Canon forum? I believe we are all here to discuss photography and the art of it most importantly, but our gear is what unites us even more.

We need a place to discuss the grip causing the cameras to shut off in 20D and the focus issues with the 1D mkIII.

Also the question such as "what lens/camera/flash should I pick?"

But, and it's my personal opinion, if you want something to worship then join a cult or a church. It will probably cost you less in the end. My posts reflect this opinion and I try to steer people away into locking up in one brand only.

You'll find that most really good photographers use the cameras as tools and can easily switch from one to the other to express their vision.

"The camera captures what you see, but you have to see"
Forgot the copyright.
