This depicts one of the statues featured near the base of Liverpool's Ventilation Tower. The tower allows air from the Mersey tunnel to escape. Rather than build a simple chimney the architect (Herbert J Rowse) build a gothic tower which has become a feature on the Liverpool skyline and forms part of the world heritage site.

The tower was badly damaged by bombing during the war, but was rebuilt in 1951.

At the base of the tower (facing the sea) are two statues - night and day. This is night, day was hidden by scaffolding.

Interesting point of view, but something is missing in this picture.
Now don't ask me what, because I can't tell, but the picture isn't doing it for me. Perhaps the framing is too tight (or not tight enough), or the subject ist too central, perhaps BW would be better. But I feel there can be done something about it...

The problem here is that the statues are set into a very plain wall. There is no interest in the background and 'night' is just a few feet away from a rather modern looking automatic office door. The framing needed to be tight to remove the distracting features.

A different angle.

I like both images, Damian, though I think I prefer the second one. It has a bit more contrast.
I wonder if straightening the verticals might help. I think it works on the second but throws the figure out of proportion too much in the first. (yes, I gave it a try)

As usual some good backround info.

Thanks Cameron. I tried it too, but the fact that the statue is sat in a curved section gave a rather distorted look.

Both are good Damian, but I too think I prefer the second. Interesting story about the ventilation tower.

I know if they were building it today it would just be a grey pipe. :(

Nice shot Tom. Where you in Seacombe - outside the Ferry pub?
