While out shopping i was by the zoo, ( no camers equipment with me) so i went in to check it out anyway. While lookig around i saw plenty of canon and the other brand of dslr cameras with the big lenses and to my suprize most were using auto, ( green box). I talk to some about the camera and lenses, and they been shooting over a year or two. I just had to ask why they use auto instead of trying to use different setting's. Oh this is so much easyer this way. To me this is a big waste of money to spend and not to learn and use the different setting's. Why not just a P&S ? Oh well to each his own. This is not to put anybody down. Just sharing. pos

pos,,, most DSLRs will live their lives entirely in Auto.. Most people who buy DSLRs want a camera that is easy to use and produces good images,, point & shoots can be fiddly.. Access and the cost of DSLRs makes photography much easier than the film days where SLRs were reserved for advanced amateurs and professionals..

The people you are talking about don't want to think about taking photos and are happy with shots of Johnny playing soccer and little Abby's birthday party..Let these people be and allow them to enjoy their toys..

As prices have fallen, a lot of people are buying dSLRs to function as high end P&S. Overall I think they do end up with a very capable P&S, though the slowish kit lenses and ISO400 limit in auto don't give them as much advantage as they could gain shooting in the 'creative' modes.

I think some do become frustrated by missed focus as dSLR and shallower DOF start to require a greater precision there.

I do find the prospect of expensive lenses and 'auto' mode harder to fathom. Presumably one would purchase a $1000 lens only to access some specific feature (usually fast aperture, but also perhaps fast AF performance). Then to relegate the control to 'auto' seems illogical.

This is why the S5 and the G9 series are doing so well. They can function completely on auto and get great pictures. Why they go with the DSLR is surprising to me, but most are quite interested in learning the camera and technology. They just don't realize that really good shots may require a lot more learning and some expensive upgrades, including computers and software. Most people who don't want to be bothered with the tech stuff I recommend the S5. It's got great length and is really sharp.

I can understand getting a DLSR and using the green box. Everyone who knows even a little about photography knows that the DLSRs give you the ability to swap out lenses of different focal lengths. This opens up the range of focal lengths over teh P&S. From what I have seen most people are green box users. All that said, my camera hasn't seen the green box in quite some time.

It's funny to watch people shoot a building that is 50+ft away, using the popup flash.

What gets me is how everyone seems to be able to see exactly what position that teeny tiny little dial is in.. when it's an inch from the person's face or chest. I can barely read the model number of the camera other people are using. I've never been able to see what mode someone is in... can't imagine stalking someone closely enough to catch that!

What I can't figure out is why, if you're gonna use auto, not just use 'P'?? Instead of the camera taking control of literally everything, it only adjusts the f/stop and shutter. Way easier and makes so much more sense.

I was a car racing event a couple of years ago taking photos with my 400d with its 75-300 kit lens
attached and got talking to a bloke next to me that had a 30d with 100-400L.

I was in full manual and he told me I should be in sports mode!(like he was)

I thought to myself if I wanted photos of parked cars I would go to the pits.

Actually cameras like the Canon S5 IS give you an all in one image stabilized zoom range that is equivalent in FOV to about 35mm to 430mm. The only place a typical dSLR kit improves on this is on the wide end, and most P&S users don't realize what a wider angle does for them. They want 'lots of zoom'.

Andrea, I was not stalking anyone, I was just asking about their camera and lens and how they like them. I didn't put them down after noticing what mode they was using. Just a observation. pos

Of course, the really annoying thing is when all those 'green box' cameras produce far better images than yours - Maybe the mode you use doesn't really matter and it's all about the final image... ;)
