Hi,

I am looking for a freeware screensaver that can either (1) display RAW files, or (2) run a program when it starts (this way I can start IrfanView in slideshow mode).

Any recommendations ?

Thanks !

If you have Windows and the codecs to view raw from http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx it will display CR2's in the "photos" screensaver that comes with windows. Just put them in the "photos" folder or redirect it to the folder of your choice.

I'm the same here, it took me a long time to start using Raw for the reason that I can't view the CS2 files. Now I'm used to go in Bridge to see them, but still a pain in the butt when I want to delete files. I got to go back and fort to look at the files name.
If any one fund a way to view the files with Vista, it would be great if they could post a link.

Dozer: IrfanView is a great & very quick viewer / simple editor that works with RAW.

There's also a program called Arcsoft Raw Thumbnail viewer that allows you see thumbnails of RAW photos in Windows Explorer.

Both are freeware.

I have CR2 files associated with IrfanView, and I have Arcsoft installed. I see thumbnails of RAW files in Explorer just as I can see other files, and when I double-click them IrfanView comes up with file loaded - it's as fast or even faster than Window's native viewer. IrfanView has a few cool features, and you can transfer file from it to Photoshop. The only thing I miss with this setup is ability to show RAW in photo screensaver. IrfanView allows you create a screensaver but it appears to be embedding files in it, and a 40GB screensaver file is a bit of overkill ;)

Google's Picasa photo software is free and has a slideshow/screensaver function that will display your raw files. I have it running on one of my computers at home.

Use the link I provided above. The whole point of that download is so you can work with raw files in XP and Vista. When its installed you can view them with the picture viewer that is part of vista, and will allow thumbnails as icons.

I did instal that, and it's still not working.

I don't know why you need some freeware to do what windows can do. Both Windows XP and Vista have the ability to have pictures as a screensaver.

However they don't support the RAW format. What I can understand is why you don't just convert the RAW files to JPG (aka processing the photo) and then use windows screensaver to display the pictures?

Its actually 2 downloads. A validation tool that validates your windows, Once it is validated you can download the Codecs. Did you do both? (just checking)

OK, I must pop the same question again.. was using Picasa's s/s but once I installed drivers for my new monitor (Dell 2209wa) it started causing BSOD's. The blue screen complains about video card driver for Nvidia, however it only started to happen after getting the new monitor, and only when running Picasa screensaver, so there's definitely a connection here...

Anyway, is there any other way to get CR2s to show up in screensaver ?
