Question for FireFox Experts

or anyone who might know. Coming from IE 7 you have the option of opening a new tab with a page loaded on it. Where as with FF the only option I can find loads a blank page in a new tab.

Is there away set up FF so new tabs aren't always blank?

My scroll wheel mouse enables me to open a new tab with content by clicking the scroll wheel. Must be in FF options or mouse configuration (mine was set up like this by default).

Short answer is - yes very possible, but I don't know where it is configured.

Im not sure I undersatand the process you are describing. I dont even know how to open a blank tab. Can you describe your question a bit better?

What link would you like the new tab to open to? I think it's set that way because it's the most logical way.

If you want a new tab to open a link, you right click on a link and open in a new tab (or set your mouse to do it w/ one click).

Otherwise, most people open a new tab to go to a completely new site or search. If this is the case, loading a blank page is much, much quicker than the new tab having to load your homepage or whatever first before you do anything else. Blank tab + entering new site is quicker. Blank tab + search (via searchbar) is quicker than a new tab having to load google.com (or whatever) first, and then loading it again with your search results.

So the question that needs answered is what page do you need it to load? The page you were currently on? If so, this plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/28) accomplishes that.

I guess I'm just too use to IE as you can set it to open new tabs without being blank. For example if I'm viewing POTN and I want to read something on Yahoo I just click the new tab button in IE and it opens the page with yahoo already loaded, not a blank page as in FF.

TheSonofDarwin _ that works and thanks but too requires a right click then a selection for the action.

added this: I realized how to add the Duplicate Tab button which makes it much easier, thanks.

Am I to assume Yahoo is your homepage? If that's the case, then you'd want this extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/777) so all new tabs load your homepage by default. If Yahoo is not your homepage, then I'm simply confused because the browser would have to be a mindreader otherwise :lol:

If you are opening a new tab to Yahoo because it's your homepage, use the extension here. If you want to load yahoo to search, use the yahoo search bar from a blank tab as it's infinitely more efficient.

Edit: I see that you can change IE7 tabs to open the homepage instead of blank, which answers my own question by lack of other options. So you'd want the plugin in this post to replicate that feature.

I use a very handy addon in FF called easyGestures. When you click the wheel button you get a customizable menu for opening tabs, navigating, saving files, etc. Have a look on the Firefox Addon page (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=easygestures&cat=all).

Do yourself a favor and get the Tabs Mix Plus extension. Life will never be the same :-)

My favorite feature is the session manager. You can save tab setups (such as a daily workspace, etc), and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows if the system (or Firefox) crashes.

You don't need to change any prefs or use a plugin, simply click a link with the mouse scroll wheel and a new tab with that content opens in the background. Or you can hold ctrl and left click the link and the tab will open.

If you want the focus on that tab there is a setting to change that in prefs.
