I am getting ready to upgrade from my trusty G3 to a 20D. I will use it for taking photos of collectables, some close ups of details and your basic non pro camera use. Is there a better lens than the kit lens for my intended usage in the less than $350 range?
Thanks, Mike

Try a 28-105/3.5-4.5 (not the cheaper 4.5-5.6) or a 24-85.
Honestly, I would get the kit 18-55 along with the 24-85.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Xr Di, but I wouldn't give up the kit lens just yet. Get the kit, shoot with it for a while and then decide whether it suits your needs or not. The kit lens is, after all, very good performer for the money, and gives you not very bad wide-angle ability - which you would buy for a lot of money otherwise.

You will hear this over and over again............the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and the Canon 50 f1.8.

Consider the kit with 17-85 IS rather than the kit with the 18-55. You can't do better than that for the money.

Thanks everyone. I will do some reading on the Tamron and the Canon 17-85 IS.
