One more question regarding stock / advertising photos:

I did download photoquote for pricing, but I am still confused regarding the pricing of a stock photo. When you license a stock photo, is that an exclusive license? That is to say, do you license a photo in such a way that ONLY that one client use that photo for the duration of the license? If that is a decision made between the client and the photographer, is there a price difference between the exclusive license and a regular license? If there is a price difference, then how much of a difference? 100%? Times 10%

Thanks for the help,

Rad

Rad a lot depends on the photo and how it is being used. Generally speaking tho, you wouldn't want to double license an image during the same time period.

For example lets take the My Pumpkin shot from the 2004 best of the best contest here. Now you wouldn't want to license that image to a farm which grows pumpkins for a billboard advertising their farm and pumpkin sales and then also sell it to another place which may not grow but does sell pumpkins for halloween in conjunction with their haunted house.

The best thing to do is know the uses that your image is being used for and make sure you don't second license that image to anyone who could be in competition with your first client.

well put jeff

it also depends if your selling stock thru a stock house or on your own. most stock houses have very clear guidelines and do their best to enforce them, something that fincially you may not be able to do. if your new to selling stock, check out www.istockphoto.com - not the best money but a good place to get your feet wet and it can lead to www.istockpro.com
