Hi, I'm new here, so howdie.
A question... I'm just waiting (you know how it is) for my new 20D to arrive, an upgrade from a well loved 10D, and among the things I'm looking forward to is the black and white mode. Can someone tell me, please, do things settings affect the CR2 file? Or are they just for the jpg?
thanks in advance.
ps, I use a Sigma 15-30, Sigma 20 f1.8, Tamron XP 28-75 Di, 50 f1.8 Mk I, 70-200 f4 L

Welcome on board! You will enjoy it around here!
The 20D B&W mode does not affect the CR2 file. I have always wondered about the usefulness of B&W modes, when the effect can be replicated post shooting (in PS CS you can apply photofilters than desaturate to achieve this) whilst still retaining the option to keep the image in colour, if you are shooting RAW as well, you will still have the colour options available!

Peter...
thanks for your reply... I also shoot CR2, but would like a B&W proof to help visualise tones, or to show a client. So the preview would be very useful! Right now I use a 10D, but carry an old Oly 2020 as a B&W 'Polaroid' to see the effect.
cheers

The view you get on the lcd will be b&w, even though the raw file will still retain all the color data.

If you use the EOS Viewer Utility you can actually turn on B&W mode just like in camera, with corresponding filters. So, basically you can get the exact same result that showed on your LCD without having to much around in PS if that's not your thing.

I have recently started using the B/W feature on my 20d and am in love with it. It has made me realise what nuances make or break a b/w image. The ability to instantly check and shift the light source or position to achieve better or more appropriate contrast etc has improved my eye for a b/w shot rapidly. Before I would try and retry various conversions not quite understanding why it didn't work. Having the ability to see instantly and try something new has yeilded some great results.
A bit off topic I know but just had to shae that with you.

thanks all...
smudge: you got it! That's exactly what I mean about seeing the tones. This and the response speed are the main reasons I'm upgrading. More news soon (Ihope) ;-)
