Horror of horrors today. Headed out this morning to do my very first assignment for the photography class I finally got into..

And I dropped my Pro1 on the pavement. Lens first. Didn't break the glass, but it dented up everything around it. The lens is jammed and the camera won't turn on. http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif

It's in the shop getting an estimate. My poor baby!

That's the last time I don't use the neckstrap, let me tell ya!

<sniffle>

I dropped my 10D on a concrete floor once. It was lying on my lap, I was changing lenses and it slid off my lap (without a lens attached) and fell on the conrete, with the lens mount down. There's now a dent on the built-in flash, but for the rest no scratches and fortunately no problems with functionality (the flash also still works).

Now I always hang my camera around my neck when changing lenses.

Already before it happened, I just knew that sooner or later something like this was going to happen. Sooner or later you'll drop your camera or a lens on the floor...

I hope your Pro 1 can be fixed......

imanewbie, my condolences.

NO!!

So far I've owned 4 cameras and none of them including the lens has ever banged against any hard surface.

Actually the only sensitive electronic device I've ever let fall was my cell phone. Several times. It only has very very miniscule marks.

I am happier when my cell phone is on the floor (with the battery shaken loose)

I dropeed my 17-40 out of my pocket onto the street. When I jammed it in the pocket, I really knew I was being lazy and I should have put it somewhere else. When it landed, I was convinced I should have put it somewhere else. It landed on the mount cap which seemed to protect it. There was a small scratch but I think I was lucky. It has worked fine ever since (although now I am guaranteed to have a problem by saying this). I guess (hope) Canon builds them tough. Now I have to see how long it is before I start doing stupid things again. I am sure it won't be too long. I just hope I am lucky next time!

I always use the neckstrap! It's just more convenient and I know myself. If I don't use it I'll very likely drop the camera in some way. I'm far too clumsy...

Happened with my 300D once, only thing is I WAS using the neckstrap. The thing that hold the strap together let one end slide off some how, no idea really.. and KABOOM

Don't be too hard on yourself; everyone will eventually drop a camera or lens.

My 300D took a nasty smack into a hardwood floor when my Bouvier, overjoyed to see me heading towards the door with car keys and leash in one hand, camera in the other, jumped up and knocked it out of my hands.

No damage fortunately, to camera or dog.

There is a sig line on a BMW motorcycle list that I frequent which goes something like: "There are two kinds of bikers, those who have gone down, and those who haven't...yet".

Very true I think, in both hobbies.

Canon is pretty good about this. Did you call them about it? I drive right by one of their main headquarters in Cranbury, NJ every day, so one time I stopped in and asked them if they could repair a brand new Canon camcorder that was broken (because I had dropped it in the street, but I didn't mention it). They fixed it in under a week, no questions asked. There were clear scrathes on the casing too, and they still didn't question it.

Neck strap=your friend..;) But seriously, if you're going to be doing a lot of shooting, you should look into some sort of photographer's insurance. You'll end up paying somewhere around $200 or $300 per year but you'll be covered in case of any dropping/accidental damage/theft etc.. well worth it. I'll be shooting a Mudvayne show if Feb and decided to get it myself in case any moshers get out of hand.. I'm borrowing some glass from a friend and can't afford to replace it or my cam if anything happens.

Well, here's the update...

With a heavy discount on the labor (because we know the camera shop guy), the estimate rang in at $854!!! The entire lens has to be replaced. :(

Man... I just finished paying off the camera!

I don't have photographer's insurance... The reason I bought this camera in the first place is because I wanted a digital so I wouldn't feel 'film-wasting-hesitation' as I learn the ropes. Also, so I could get instant feedback on my pics. It was the highest end camera I could afford. So, I didn't think about insurance, since I'm just an amateur with great aspirations.

Guess it's back to my Pentax MX film camera for a while.

sigh

Photographers Insurance was mentioned in a previous post. I did a couple of web searches and came up dry for any companies that sells such a thing in the US. Does anyone have any recomended companies to purchase this from?

If you have home owner's or tenant's insurance, most companies will allow you to take out an all perils "rider" endorsement on your policy.

This covers specific equipment like cameras for loss and theft outside your house, i.e. stolen from a hotel or airport or from your car.

Most automobile policies severely limit what is covered if the car is broken in to.

I don't know what the coverage is for accidental breakage, so this may not be applicable to your needs, but it is a cheap way to cover theft.

My rider costs me an extra $105 Cdn. per year premium on approximately $5,000 of equipment.
