So, today I finally get around to trying to order the g-9 I have been thinking and thinking about (to back up my 40-d). I call b&h and am told it has been discontinued and to be on the look out for something new within next 2 weeks. what's the scuttlebutt on this, anyway?

Not heard that yet on the g9. where did you hear about the 10?? I myself have been kicking it around for one.

That's very interesting re: the G9. It's point and shoot release time apparently. Word is, ala www.nikonrumors.com that Nikon is also releasing 4 new P&S on August 6th (this Wed.) one with ISO 12,800 and 12 F.P.S. (which is pretty good but still not in the 60 FPS photo / 1200 F.P.S. video league occupied by the Casio EX-F1, but I wonder if Casio has set the mark that P&S makers now are trying to aim for).

G-10 is in the pipeline......

what stinks for me is, I have a wedding in less than two weeks and wanted the g9 to back up my 40-d (recently purchased - love it, but need back up, also a camera to keep in my purse for my daily travels). so, the timing is really bad for me, unless they release the g-10 in the next few days.

I just picked one up a few minutes ago argggh! Should I return it? I just got it from Circuit City for $420 including tax. I originally ordered from Amazon but they will not have them in stock until August 12th... Hmm.

The Panasonic LX3 or whatever it is called is supposed to be out this month, so it might make it in time for your wedding. I would definitely buy it over a G9 if it arrives in time. The LX3 looks like serious competition to the rumored specs for the G10.

If you want to backup a 40D in a wedding situation, at least go get a XSI. How funny will you look as a wedding photog using a P&S. A XSI with stock lens fits in a purse. Just get rid of all that excess makeup you girls have in there.

...buying camera's in august is generally a poor idea unless you NEED something specifically.

With the spring rebates just ending in July, and fall trade shows around the corner with new product announcements and fall rebates coming with them the month of August is just sandwiched in between in limboland.

Me I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 5D replacement, a 40D, 135mm f/2 and a 35mm f/1.4, but am somewhat patiently waiting.

...using the G9 as a backup is a REALLY bad idea. The image quality is vastly different and you will be seriously lacking in the lens dept. you won't be able to have nearly the light gathering power of a good f/2.8 or faster lens. Using a slow lens for wedding photography is a bad idea and the G9 has one, among other G9 issues.

true - but the plan is not to have to use it! :) what, get rid of the make-up??? never! actually, it's gadgets mostly in my bag - digital elph, flash drive, olympus digital recorder (im also a musician and sometimes have emergency song-writing sessions!) and my mp3 player.

yes, the g9 would look funny - untiil they see the pictures - it ain't the camera, folks.....

I had a G9 for awhile and I agree that it will not be funny after they see G9 wedding pictures. But I hope it all works out for you.

I'm not sure how that works, you are getting paid for a wedding and your backup is a G9?
That's like saying you are in the Indy 500 and your backup car is a hyundai excel...or whatever those things are.

haha

I would take that Excel over a Ford Escort, infact ANY Ford, any day!

Forget the G9. you can't make good pictures in low light with it. Yes, Sara in this case it is the Camera...

For now, yes, that is the plan. Eventually I will have a second 40D body, but right now, since I need a good carry-around camera anyway, and since my next wedding is a low-key, semi-friend/family affair, I am using this opportunity to add the G9 - (or? but Josh at B&H also said two other popular cameras of this ilk are also down for the count) -

FWIW, a good photographer friend told me, "you'll love the G9 so much you'll wish you could get away with using it as your main camera."

I am also, to tell the truth, sick of lugging lots of heavy equipment around.

So yeah, I'm thinking the combo of 40D/G9 (or something like it) will be good - as I said, for now.

In reading other posts in the G series section, I see I'm not so terribly far off.

Well, the P6000 is out.
Shoots RAW (except in a format that can only be used in a Windows program until a codec is released - boo Nikon)
Built-in GPS (first camera to feature this apparently)
A nice looking mini grip there.
It will be interesting to see how thing heat up with the expected G10 and this model in this segment.

Looks like a yawn compared to the LX3. Classic case of Nikon being one step behind. The rumored G10 should be better than the Nikon at least.

Something I can't understand is the new raw format from Nikon. How many raw formats are they going to use. At least until October, it seems like you won't be able to do anything with raw unless you process it in-camera:

"COOLPIX Picture Control NRW (RAW) files can only be processed in-camera. NRW (RAW) files are compatible for use in-camera, with ViewNX (Windows version only available early October 2008) or with WIC-based applications. Capture NX, Capture NX2 and NEF files are not compatible with NRW (RAW) images."

That's pretty silly if the only thing that can process the raw files at the moment is the camera itself.

Hi Sara - I am also sick of lugging all the gear around and decided months ago that I needed to G9 to compliment my 40D and big bag of lenses.
40D + G9 makes an ideal combination. I keep the G9 in the car all the time with a spare battery - which, incidentally, it never seems to need.
I've not heard of the G10 till now - Oh well; another three hundred quid I suppose - I wonder what the wife will think? Perhaps it will be our little secret.

wonder if canon will make a useable ISO over 80 on the G10 and does something about the G9's total ability to search and nuke every single highlight it finds, no matter what the lighting or settings.

The RAW format is dependant on the sensor used. Every time you use a different sensor, you end up with another RAW format.

I have to agree with the above Posters. Please use an SLR as your backup. a P&S will make you look VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!!
