my 20D didn't start out at 0001. I'm already at 6500, and I know I haven't taken that many pics. Whats gives?

I suspect that the CF card you started with had been used in a camera that had whatever your starting count was on it and qued your camera from the last number used in the previous camera.

Like CC10D said ... no big deal to worry about.

If you used an old compact flash card from another Canon digital camera (e.g. G3) that was not formatted before putting it into the camera, the camera just continues with the picture count.

Same happens if the people in the shop try out the camera to see if it is working and use a CF card form another camera.

If you want to set it to 0, just change the setting file numbering =continuous, format the card in the camera, and set the file numbering back to continuous. It should start again at 0.

Best regards,
Andy
