I know this is not the best forum in the world to ask this question being a Canon forum and all but...

Why am I seeing so many Nikon cameras in use over Canons?

I did some pretty extensive research before deciding on Canon. The deciding factor was Canon's sensor. The reviews I read tauted their low noise levels at higher ISO settings, because of they way the developed them over Nikon.

Anyway, here lately I've been seeing Nikons everywhere. A few hobbiest I've met are using, they seem to standard issue for theme park photographers, and the local paper. The profs at the local university recommend them with a "just get a Nikon". Even the girl that came to the house the other day to take some shots for the real estate company had a Nikon.

What am I missing? Certainly there is not that big of a discrepancy between Nikon and Canon to warrant such a uneven balance.

I think your research is very limited. One look at the sidelines of any professional sporting event will show Canon by at least two to one, if not greater.

As to the profs at the local university, there's an old saying: Some people do, others teach.

I see the same thing, specially if you are in Asia, seems like many ppl use Nikon over Canon, and they even have Nikon Seminar every 3 months. Is it because Nikon lens are cheaper than Canon? correct me if im wrong. I saw lots of professional use Canon tho.

I see the exact opposite. I rarely see a Nikon in the wild.

...and I look. not just noticing if it's Canon.

Cameras used to have regional areas of popularity like birds back in the olden times. Now that there are just two big companies maybe your see one or the other depending on where you are. Has anyone seen an olympus or pentax in the wild? I almost saw a pentax once, the guy had one in his camera bag he said.

Nikon lenses cheaper than Canon? Not by a long shot, except in limited circumstances.

you know why? Nikon 600VR cost nearly $10K while Canon 600IS only $7600. :)

The super long lens from Nikon is SUPER CRAZY in term of price.

At motorsports events I rarely see somebody in the media use a Nikon, in fact I can't remember one instance where I have seen one.
You'll find that theme parks and bigger companies will just give photographers cameras to use, they probrably get the cameras at discounted prices for promotion, I heard of something similar happening at disneyland.
Depends where you go, but sporting and wildlife seem to be effectivly defficient of Nikon's.

I think it is all the advertising done on tv within shows such as CSI.

Not anymore. Whole bunch of agencies (including big ones) and papers switched to Nikon lately. So at the moment, it's about 50:50, when less then year ago it was something like 80:20 or even 90:10 for Canon.

I went to the British Museum a few back and it was packed ... most with DSLRs had Nikon but a lot of the folks where from the Far East. Canon long lenses are cheaper than Nikon which is one reason you see so many at sports events. There is less difference below 300m.

It all depends what people are using I think. I think now that Nikon uses a CMOS sensor in their D300 and D700 (correct me if I'm wrong), and has a full frame in the D700, their cameras are more appealing to those who used to be die-hard Canon users. Both systems have their pros and cons. Canon gear is definitely cheaper. They both seem to have their ups and downs depending on the new releases. Seems like trends constantly switch around. I think Canon's held the market for many, many years now and Nikon is just playing a bit of catch-up.

I see a lot of both these days. I used to see more Canons than Nikons, but it varies and with Nikon offering such competitive cameras it only makes sense to see a bunch of them around. The Rebels are very popular though, and the 40D is a great value and I imagine the replacement for the 5D and eventually the 40D will be popular products too.

It's much more interesting to me to see what other people use when it's not Nikon. I haven't seen any Olympus cameras around but I know a few with the newer Pentax DSLRs.
