I've already seen it.

It's just like the old one but is now available in three exciting colors:
Red
Lime Green
Metallic Blue

Black has been discontinued. There are already way too many of those available in the used market and Canon doesn't want to compete with them.

Just another conspiracy/prediction thread. Unless they called you and said "Hey we have the new 5D's down here" this is the president of Canon", it'd be an awfully odd way of introducing a new camera don't you think?

Ok so here's the deal. I drive from MA to NJ (actually a hotel/conference center) wait around a bit get handed an NDA from a product testing group/marketing firm. bla bla bla...wait some more.
All cellphones and cameras (and actually anything metallic) has to be left outside in little trays.
Go into the room get numbered copies of some product sheets. Quick scan Product 3 Canon 5D replacement - no picture. Person walks up to a dais, starts talking and going though products.
Some new P&S from Canon, G10/11/12 something....new FS lens, then "5D replacement" they talk about features, which basically boils down to "more of everything" but not quite what say the 40D has in burst rates. Better ISO, more pixels (more than 12 less than 16), then moves onto another lens and some crap about flashes.

Upon leaving I asked how they got my name and number etc. Registration cards, vendor feedback based on purchases, and clicking that little box that says "share my info with selected partners". In doing a quick check with some of the other people in the room, most were professionals, some were "hobbyists" that "spent much more than average" in the last 2 quarters.

And that is all I have to report, a lot less exciting than I expected, and a lot less exciting then the little mail thing looked like.
They did say they were having about 4 more of these, so if you get it and can go I would...but don't expect much.

These people said that late August very early September was the release date for the "cameras" so it is what it is.

As to colors, the only color was black on the 5D replacement, silver and black for the G whatever...which I didn't really care about.

Care to elaborate??? Of course the NEW 5D will be better than the old 5D. That's basically all you've said. Can you tell us any details? Surely they didn't say "the new 5D will have improvements over the old 5D... moving on."

The new lenses that were talked about don't really interest me as they were some EF-S lenses that would mimic some of the L lenses I have already. It seemed to me that the focus was on "pro-sumer" middle ground stuff. They started talking about market penetration in sub $1000 bodies and sub $1500 kits and gaining market share in the sub $250 P&S market. I never even owned the G series stuff so I don't really know anything about that. They also seemed to imply that the "5D replacement" was not a pro body, and maybe that was always true but I sort of thought of it as an entry level pro body.
They did go over a list of features and how they would compare to Nikon, the D3 and D700. The way they made it seem, the "5D replacement" would be better than a D700 and not quite the D3 but have a much better sensor than the D3. Something to the effect that the "5D replacement" would be more technologically advanced then any other pro-sumer camera on the market. Incorporating technology from the flagship 1D2 Mk III.
One guy asked if it would use a different battery and use different cards. The answer was "Canon is striving to deliver the newest technology to the market, that makes sense." To some that meant that it would be dual card, but no one said that.

The other lesson learned here for me was, it pays to actually fill out all those little cards and create an e-mail, if for nothing else then to check that box, "share your contact info with selected vendors and partners".

My take

Take it for what youd like, its in the rumors section? and im curious what people on here would like in order to believe what they're reading, signed information in email document form...letter from the president of canon? Im mean common? for all we know this could be real, the fact that he went and they told him close to nothing makes me believe it even more than if he came back saying blah blah blah this and that...its canon, nothing allowed inside/grab bag chosen from cards filled out etc./show them the stuff coming out/tell you nothing/answer questions vaguely/and send you on your way...

plausible = sure why not?

weather its real or not we still are in the same place...saving for a camera that we have no idea what the specs are...just hoping canon will make us happy

Wait till sept and find out is what my plan is ;)

jerrythesnake

why would canon invite mr joe bloggs to show them next to no information, whats the point??

wallybud
6th of August 2008 (Wed), 14:57
If you read it he said they invited a bunch of people, most likely picked at random from their database or w.e ... also he said there would be a bunch more such gatherings, obviously the same thing...canon most likely wants to prove the rumors true to people and let them go out into the world and spread it (with next to no REAL info) and get a huge buzz going before they reveal it in sept at the convention...

I guess that makes sense right? anyone lol

jerrythesnake
6th of August 2008 (Wed), 15:27
i would of thought canon had enough resources to leak information without having to get mr bloggs in to show him nothing so he can give us no more info than we know or dont know already. this as you rightly say is the rumours section , gave us a laugh anyway..

What was the name of the hotel/conference center in NJ? There was no N.D.A. on the invitation, right? You should be able to share that so we can call the hotel and verify that Canon had an event there.

I also wonder why Canon would hold a marketing event in NJ when it's HQ is on Long Island and then invite people from MA. Seems odd.

I don't think we need to cross-examine a member. This is the Rumor Forum, and there's a lot of information posted here that can't be relied on. You may choose to believe this or not. Considering there were likely other people there, the lack of confirmation anywhere else suggests that this is likely a hoax. Who really cares? Assign whatever credibility to the story you'd like, but let's not pursue this any further with the OP.

Name one time when Canon ever leaked information about new models in such a manner. I think that's just about all we need to know. If the OP can offer additional corroboration, and if he chooses to do so, it will be interesting. If not, this is just another twist of our collective noses, and we should move on to the next such rumor.

It seems to me there is often a "leak" just before new significant gear is announced, and it always seems to come from a local Canon office or site. Could be that its Sweden's turn. . .

I hear the new 5D will be available soon. However, the one that will work the best won't be available for 8 months. I hear there will be 2 recalls, one for a sub sub mirror problem and another for the shutter that they forgot to put in initially. However, everyone will get a letter apologizing and a extended 5 yr warranty for the transmission.

I was invited to a similar event just before the 1dmk3 launch - a top line photographer was there to demo Canon gear. He took the floor and "accidetnally" split that a 1ds mk3 was to be coming. The Canon rep, just smiled at the audience reaction....on purpose or just having fun??

At the time, everyone i spoke to put it down to a slip fo the tongue, but history has shown that is was not - the pro was a beta tester and had been authorised to tease without releasing any hard details.

So don't think that Canon wouldn't do what SOT has said just to stir community intereset - That sort of coverage is worth alot more than the paid for column inches and tv time :-)

Oh and thanks SOT, nice balance between NDA and spilling all :-)

I have experience running focus groups, this seems veeery suspicious based on what SOT described. If they were asking about features desired...its not coming out any time soon. It's even late in the game for pricing if its coming out at Photokina...

Please share with us the purpose of the focus group, they would have stated this at the onset.

Several years ago I was invited to a Microsoft event showcasing the new Office software suite. We signed an NDA on the way in. They were vague as to answering certain questions, but would elaborate on other questions.

The software came out a few months later, and we received a complimentary copy in the mail at about the same time.

Bet SOT won't see a free 5D in the mail in September though! (jeez, could you imagine?)

My point is: I'm not a software developer, or even a "pro" office user; I've purchased and registered Microsoft products before, and my number just happened to come up and I got invited. Nothing has happened like it since.

Thanks to SOT for sharing, even if it's just pulling our leg...;)

Random members of the public invited to a product launch ahead of press/trade/pros and asked to sign an NDA.

Yeah right.

Hell, I'm 90% sure there are some press/pros/trade people with test mules right now.

Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime.[4]

Yes, Sweden IS neutral. They have sent some forces into int. ops, but in ww2 they were neutral (at least in theory).

Sweden is neutral, but not a friendly neutral. Hence their blocking any aid (by sea) by the Allies to also-neutral Finland when the Soviet Union did its sneak attack. Finland then had to ally with **** Germany to get any help at all.

LOL!
Where on earth did you get that idea?!
How would Sweden been able to block sea aid, only it would have to pass Germany and Russia on it's way to Finland? Fact is that Sweden assisted with numerous volonteer and refugee help.
We have been neutral on the surface but since WW2 in practice a NATO subsidiary. All our defence have been poining east as the only thinkable attacker was the Sovjet Union.

Off topic. Let's get back to photo subjects please.

If we can't do that, we'll have to lock this thread.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Hardly, and I am one.

So am I, and check up on the Swedish history of "neutrality" in second world war. Swedish police stopping jewish refugees from norway on the border, swedish police handing norwegian jews over the german troopers, only to be sent to poland.. Sweden was _very_ ****-friendly both openly and covert during wwII, only in the last stages they changed their cape to fit the coming allied victory better.

But I'll stop my politics now ;)
