Although a bit more boxy shape than the Mk1 , the Mk2 Cortina has a nice chunky , purposeful shape.The 1600E model ( E stood for Executive)had sporty Rostyle wheels and a real wood dash fitted .The engine and suspension were also uprated.One of the best Fords ever made in my humble opinion.
Here is some photos from a show in Northampton I was at last weekend.

Hi Bill;
Now this brings back memories...
The 1600E was the first car I ever bought - just after I passed my test - as a young lad... The insurance cost me as much as the car did!... It was my pride & joy...
Nice series;
Thx;

Thanks for the comments. Yes,There were a few Savage Cortina's at the show,having 3litre V6 engine conversions that replaced the standard 1600GT Kent engine.

Excellent photos! I just found this thread via a Google image search for Savage Cortinas!
My first car was a MkII 1600 Super in Silver Fox. It had 184,000 miles on the clock and I took it up to 215,000.
I'd like to buy a Savage, preferably an estate, but I'm not up to date on prices. I could have bought one twenty years ago (needing restoration) for £1500, but I couldn't afford it then!

Hi Mike-DT6 you should have bought that one back then.Savages are now very scarce.Prices are similar to a Mk2 Cortina Lotus around £10,000 for a good one.I think estates are less desirable and you may pick up one cheaper.The Mk2 estate is however a very practical motor and with 3litres of V6 power it would cruise well.
Heres another pic of my friends Savage and a Mk2 estate

Very nice! That looks lovely. Nice looking estates too.
I don't think I'd ever pay that much for any Cortina, but at least the prices aren't as silly as MkI Escort prices!
One of my friends is into MkI Escorts (he has three) and some of the prices people pay for rally replicas is ridiculous!

Wow, some realyy nice shots....
They make me feel old
10k for a good one, I'd rather spend it on a Mk2 than a second hand Mondeo ;)

Welcome to the forum Mark. :-)
That's a very nice MkII you have there. Looks like a 1600E minus the vinyl roof.
Regarding the steering, did you mean steering box rather than rack? MkIIs had steering box steering, rather than rack and pinion, although there are a few around that have been converted to rack and pinion steering (including one that someone I was talking to swore blind was done by the factory).

Hi Mike yes its a 1600E the vinal roof was an extra never fitted to my car, the streering rack was offered to me from a club i'm in. I'm not sure if they ment a box or not but you are right it is a box on the car, i will have to check with them.
The Cortina is a gtreat car if you can find one thats been looked after it took me a long time to fined this one.

Nice to see the 1600E again. I had a fern green one in 1973 bought with with 19000 on the clock. Kept that for almost 10 years and loved every minute. I had forgotten how nice the dash was. I loved the simplicity and how easy things were to work on. Not the case nowadays thats for sure. Great to see these pics. Thanks for posting.

Nicely preserved interior. :-)
I remember the steering on my MkII having about 180 degrees free play in it and having to start steering into a corner before I got there! :lol:

Yes thats right I had not thought about steering boxes for years. You needed to anticipate a corner well in advance. I think we have been spoiled with rack and pinion and power steering !!

The steering box is not bad to be honest, if its in good condition there is only a small amount of play, the colour is Aquatic jade.
I have had so many good times with this car at shows and just driving around, its such a popular car with so many people.
I'm suprized they are not more expensive, most have rotted away and its hard to fined a good one, there are lots of bad ones full of filler, after fourty years i suppose its to be expected.
Iv'e been lucky the biggest job so far was to fit strut top rubber mounts to the car.
And the most expensive the webber rebuild.
