I'm looking to get a new lens for my soon to be 20D. I mainly shoot sporting events, right now basketball. What are the main differences between those 2 len's other than the price? Does the sigma even compare to the Canon? ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

See the thread 72-200 dilema above, but briefly Sigma is 95% of the Optical quailty for 50% of the price. Some say it's soft wide open but I have used both and unless you are printing large or cropping heavily (if you do get the Canon for best results) you are only likely to notice it at 70mm and this is in comparison to L glass not lessor lenses. Just MHO.

are you comparing the sigma to the canon IS model or the non IS model?

I have the Sigma and rarely take it off my 10D. Auto-focus is fast and smooth and build quality is excellent. It is a little "soft" at 2.8, razor sharp above f4. I also use mie with Sigma's 1.4 extender and love the extra reach. Don't forget to check with http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/
