I just moved up from an XT to a 40d and really love it. I want to get a sensor cleaning kit to clean the XT which has never been done. I won't mess with the 40d for awhile. I was going to buy the Delkin sensorscope kit but found a lot of negative reviews so have held off until I could get your input.
Also what would be the best 40d book to purchase?
Thanks in advance.

Personally i would go with the pec pad/ Eclipse method (or variations on it).
Ive got a Rocket blower that while it might clear some dust it seems to spread the dust around an dcan make things wores.
Ive got a Arctic Butterfly and again, it might do for everyday use but i find it can even leave grease or oil on the sensor filter.I
I tend to not clean my 40D often, in fact only recently i cleaned it for the first time since Sept last year but with my 30D i found that i tended to use all the methods, the Eclipse was used last to fix what the others couldn't so now i dont bother with the others.
Works for me.

I've used the LensPen technique many times with great success.
You should check this site:

I finally cleaned my 40D sensor after 16K clicks & 11 months of use. I used a sensor pen, it went way too well. . .
For my XT, I used the Sensor Swab (specifically for the XT's sensor - size) which is a wet approach. If I still had the XT, I'd use the sensor pen. Make sure to use a Rocket Blower first though (blow the sensor with the opening facing down).

What do you mean? They wanted $200 to clean and check my XT. I had them send it back and bought the 40d!

This seems to be the most relevant thread I can find, so...
Being new to digital (long time film holdout...) this looks like sensor dust to me, but the built-in sensor cleaning didn't seem to help. I cant imagine this is totally uncommon. Best solutions? I hate to spend a fortune to clean this thing very often.
Photos (not full size, sorry - if you have recommendations for free photo hosting please chime in) can be seen here: http://pa.photoshelter.com/gallery-show/G0000XOORXNUg9q0
In the first one they aren't too visible due to the background. In the second one you can see blemishes in the photo itself, and in the third (no lens shot at light source) they are obvious.
Any thoughts, guidance, etc. appreciated.

Yes, look like a dust. I use Rocket Blower and Lens Pens very well.

Mil - Thanks for the quick reply. I tried my old blower, which seems to have removed some of the dust, but there are some stubborn particles which don't seem to want to blow away. Which variety of the Lens Pens do you use?

To answer your question about what book to buy I got this (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Guide-Digital-Photography/dp/1598635107/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218029393&sr=8-1) book by David Bursch that has help me a lot with my 40D...great details about all the settings for the camera plus some hints on certain RAW programs, Canon programs that came with the camera, cleaning...etc.

I just finished cleaning my 1DMK2 and 40D with the Visible Dust Orange swabs and VDust Plus solution which worked amazing. One swab got rid of all my dust specs and the giant dust smear in the middle.

I have never used anything but a Rocket Blower. It has always cleared all dust specks and I am always changing lenses in challenging conditions, deserts for example.

http://www.copperhillimages.com/index.php?pr=Copper_Hill_ProductsAnother vote for the Copper Hill Method.
I blow out the sensor chamber with a Rocket Blower, lock the mirror up and blow off the sensor with a Rocket Blower, lightly brush the sensor with the SensorSweep, swab the sensor with the SensorSwipe correctly wrapped with a Pec*Pad and 2 drops of E2 solution.
Here's a review of the Copper Hill method and products. (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/887543/product_review_copper_hill_images_wetdry.html?cat= 15)
