I am using two 500 watt tungsten hot lights with diffusing umbrellas against paper backgrounds (mostly white), with custom white balance and a GM grey card. Can I use the 380EX for fill with this set up? WHat would be best shooting mode and would this mess up white balance?

If you use a flash with your lighting setup (with WB set up for tungsten), the flash is going to cast a bluish fill lighting on your image so, unless that it the effect you are looking for, I wouldn't mix flash lighting with tungsten lights.

If you need the flash for any kind of kicker or fill, get an 85-series color correcting filter to shift the flash' output into the same range as your tungsten lamps.

as stated above, you are going to have to get a gel for the flash to correct for the color cast differance resulting from the differant kelvin of the flash

Thanks to all who responded. I thought the temperature of the flash might not need to be corrected for. Probably the easiest way to go for me is to get another light.
