If you use your gear for work, i.e. professionally, you will need a separate policy covering it. It can't be tacked onto your homeowners or renter's policy with a floater.

I never leave my gear in my car. Period.

If you are a member of PPA they offer a great insurance option. It cost me about $400 for the year. Includes REPLACEMENT value and you are covered world wide for anything (not illegal) including theft. I think it through Marsh

I wonder if that varies from state to state and by insurer?

Our agent knows I do freelance work for magazines but he said I can add everything to homeowners so long as I am not working out of a studio that I own.

I met with my AAA agent and was told that any equipment used for a business (even part time operated out of a house) is not covered under homeowner's insurance policy. They told me that I need a separate business policy.

I met with a state farm rep and they are charging $1.96 per $100 of equipment for coverage.

I should have asked in my first post, what state are you in? I am in NC.

I am with Erie and I cannot remember the rate. There was so much for $xxx then $1.55/$100 but I cannot remember the initial coverage.

My agent said that they only considered it pro use when you had a studio and could face liability from a client getting injured. He knows what I do and has seen a lot of my work in the magazines so he is well aware of the extent of this hobby.

Is this all you have with State Farm?

I'm in California. Maybe the policies are different in each state. The Business in the Home Policy covers the business related space and equipment (mainly computers up to $10K excluding camera equipment) in the home plus provides liability coverage when you shoot at offsite events ($1M coverage). It also includes some add'l coverage such as medical payments if someone gets injured while visting your home on phot business, and loss of income for 12 months, etc..)

I don't have any policies with State Farm, but am currently shopping for coverage. Here are a couple of state farm links:
