I have a Bogen Manfrotto 3021 tripod with a 3265 pistol grip action ball head, that I have had for years. It sat unused for a few years and now that I am back into photography I have been using it again. The first problem I am having is that the head moves in a very jerky manner and will not move smoothly at all, the second problem is that even at the tightest setting the head will not hold my XTi with the kit lens in any setting past around 30 degrees below the horizon. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem or do I just need to save up for a better head that can handle my camera let alone the XTi with my 70-200 F4?

The head probably needs a good cleaning (internally).
I would replace the head with a Manfrotto 488RC2. In addition to being easier to use (in my opinion), it will do a lot better at holding your equipment without creeping. The 3265 has a long lever with the weight of your camera/lens working against the ball through the lever.

You can adjust the 3265, but for the setup you are using I would also use SkipD's recommendation on the 488RC2. It uses the same plate also.

I know this doesn't really help, but, when researching for my new tripod, a lot of reviews said that most of the pistol grip type of heads are not really up to the job and eventually they all are susceptible to creep. So I can only agree with whats been said, go for a new Manfrotto 488RC2, you'll save yourself a lot of frustration in the long run!

Thanks guys! The pistol grip sounded like a great idea when I bought it a number of years ago but now I see that it makes the "lever" longer and adds to the problem. Thanks for the help and I guess a 488RC2 is in my future.
