Hello everyone! I just got a new camera, the canon 30d and am having trouble figuring out how to take a picture outdoors without my flash going off, so I can use the natural light, and also at night to take silhouettes...I've practiced with different manual modes and the darn thing goes off everytime...this hasn't happened to me often....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

If you are in the creative modes (P, Tv, Av, and M) (oh and A-DEP) and the flash (I'm assuming you're using the pop-up flash) is up, it will always go off. If you press it down, it shouldn''t pop-up when you press the shutter button. Does it pop up when you are in these modes?

It does pop up in these modes like you said, and I've tried to even hold it down and the shutter wont press when I do that!

yeah, weird, my 20D flash never pops up. To be honest, I didn't even know they could pop up automatically. maybe there's a custom function?

I'm not that familiar with the 30d but is there an auto flash button that is set to on? Check your menu screens....all of them to make sure.
Sorry if this didn't help, I only shoot in P or M, somtimes AV and I use speedlights so I'm not that familiar with the pop up unless I manual put it up.

The flash should only pop up automatically in some of the basic zone settings. In all of the creative zones it should only pop up if you press the little button to make it pop up. If it's doing something different from that it sounds like a dud.

Is there a custom function to control the popup flash?? I honestly don't know.

In the two years that I've owned my 30D I have never found such a setting anywhere, in the custom functions or otherwise. A quick scan of the instruction manual has not filled in any blanks either. If you want flash in any of the creative zones then you must pop it up yourself, or attach a speedlite.

That's an ouch :( If I was the OP I'd already be on the phone to Canon.

I've tried to even hold it down and the shutter wont press when I do that! Tried that with the lens set on MF?
With the 20D on manual, I don't have your problem.

Have you reset the camera to default? It's in the menu.
You have to do it for every mode. Hit the menu button and scroll down until you find "Clear Settings"
