Hello everyone,

I was going through some of my photos from a couple of months ago
and thought I would post this one of a Great Blue Heron taking off. The photo
was taken in Bouctouche Bay, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. Please feel
free to offer comments as I am new to digital photography and processing as well.

That's a very nice shot.

Since you asked for comments, I would have liked to see either more or non of the reflection in the water. The image could use some contrast added and looks a little soft - two things that can be fixed in Photoshop in under 2 minutes.

A little bit of Shadow/Highlights to bring out the detail in wings, then contrast added using Levels. I thought it had a little too much red at this point so I reduced the red saturation. A bit of sharpening added.

Not a huge difference but a bit of improvement.

Great shot. I'm sure that was difficult to capture.

Definitely a very nice shot. And not an easy one to get, either. :D

BTW, did you notice that red spot on it's wing where the gray meets the black feathers? Do you suppose it was hurt or something? :(

Absolutely a keeper. I've chased a many of these along our lakeshore here and they are hard to get this good.

Scott - nice ps work.

Thats a sweet shot! Very nice ;)

Leo, not to worry,. the red shoulders are normal seasonal markings that are sometimes completely concealed by the way the wing is tucked in while they are not flying.

I'ts funny,. I thought the exact same thing the first time I had a photo of one where this marking was clearly visible.. and red! This,. even after having all ready probably hundreds of GBH photos...

hello everyone,

Thank you for your great comments and thank you Scottes for your post processing work on my photo. It does look a lot crisper and bright. Same to you Sparker1, PaceAce and ssim. Thank you CyberDyneSystems for your explanation of the red wing patch. I am posting another photo of the same great blue heron moments before my previous photos and no red wing patch is visible.
